Thoughts on first foray into gold

Graded PCGS 63 for context. I’m seeking thoughts on whether others find this an eye appealing piece as I consider wading into the gold coins for my type set.
What appeals to me is the copperish toning . I do seek marks in field but some almost raised. Strike seems pretty crisp. While I do have confidence that I’ll be able to sort through ‘technically solid ‘ I am curious on others thoughts on admittedly more subjective eye appeal of this piece

Some people like that look. Other people hate it. The only thing that should matter is if you like it.
Congratulations!
I prefer the toning on reverse over the obverse. However, the dark spot on the headdress at 4:00 is a major distraction for my personal taste.
Congrats on your purchase, that slab is in desperate need of a polishing.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I would be inclinded to look for this color of gold. The one you have is okay, but it's not on everyone's list.
PCGS MS-64. It looks much better in person.

It’s nice enough, but yeah that one darker spot in the headdress messes up the eye appeal somewhat, but overall I like it better than a dipped one.

I find the toning to be attractive but the discoloration on the headdress and the dings on both the reverse and obverse are mildly distracting. There are thousands of gold type coins readily available so you have the option of being picky and make sure you buy something that you really like. There’s no reason to compromise on common gold coins.
What matters most is if YOU like it! I think it’s nice enough, even somewhat attractive. A good point was made earlier: with “common” gold, you can afford to be picky as there’s lots of good examples available. I hope you enjoy the “type gold ride”!

I really like the toning on that $2.50, but the carbon spot on the obverse makes it a no go for me.

The carbon spot really turns me off on that coin.
That's not a carbon spot. It's a copper spot which is fairly common on old gold coins that haven't been dipped. For an MS63 gold coin, this coin is fairly free of contact marks. Overall, I think this is a decent coin for the MS63 grade. Don't forget that quarter eagles are about the size of a dime and most of these marks won't even be noticeable when viewing the coin in hand.

That carbon spot would be a no for me. My eye, and everyone else’s is drawn to that distraction. As stated earlier, there are many of these common 2 1/2 dollar Indians that come nice. Look around.
I like gold with toning and different colors but that one is not for me. Looks more stained to me.
That coin was listed on ebay for quite a while at its offer price. I hope you like it in-hand.

Thanks for everyone’s thoughts. Super helpful to understand that type of toning is not universally enjoyed. Also helpful to point out the spot. I wasn’t sure what to make of that area. The inputs will be helpful moving forward

I see a beautiful piece👍
Congratulations
I kinda like the toning and the copper spot doesn’t bother me but I can understand others disliking it. At least it’s not a big ‘ol scratch which I really do detest!
It might be possible to conserve that spot and have it removed but it could also mess it up and ruin it!
I’m sure others will chime in if this isn’t possible.
Those will always have dings on the raised areas since those were on the planchet and don't get struck out.
I like that one.
It’s decent, but I think I’d hold out for a better example.
