Turning a corner with my Classic Head Cent set

renomedphysrenomedphys Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭✭✭

So, maybe 4-5 years in working on this set. I've had my 1809 for quite a while longer, and kinda always wanted to do the whole run just because of the difficulty of finding nice pieces. Once in a while I'll see a coin that fits what I'm trying to do, which is basically AU+ by EAC standards. Been honestly shooting for great color but on these you have to stretch that definition. I know my 1810 is a bit dark, and the reverse of my 1809 is quite dark. My 1808 on the other hand is a golden biscuit with bits of red in the devices, and my 1811 is actually quite nice for a non-CAC'd 64. That's pretty much where I'm at right now, but two new members are on the way, thanks to Liz Coggan who just happened to have both 1814's on her website: the plain 4 in 58/CAC, and the crosslet 4 in 64/CAC!

So, to be sure, I still don't have the coins in-hand. Past auction descriptions makes both sound nice, and Liz said they were both just great coins, so I'm hopeful. I should have them tomorrow.

Now I'm down to 5 others. Who knows how long this is gonna take? I know it's gonna be a chore to find a decent 11/0, but the rest should happen with patience.

True-views to follow, Cheers!

I’d be happy with a date set in attractive VF.

Great coins! They are better than anything I have ever owned.

It's so hard to find classic cents with good eye appeal in any grade. I read something about the copper planchets coming out of England at the time were just lousy quality, dark and porous and inconsistent. These must not have been cheap.

@renomedphys, those are certainly extremely strong examples and beautifully detailed for their dates. You have a wonderful eye for quality. Best of luck on its completion. Zack

Nice coins and thanks for sharing. The Classic Head Large and Half Cents are my favorite coin design. I have a nice later date Classic Head Half Cent, but that's it.

I won't buy pre 1815 copper unless it's in an OGH or 1st generation holder after I bought an 04 Draped Bust Half Cent in MS 65 BN, which 8 years later, started developing PVC spots in holder. Tom Reynolds was kind enough to help me unload it so I didn't take a financial bath on the coin.

I knew I should have been physical therapist. Such a great group of early copper Matt. Most any of those would be the cornerstone for most copper collectors, let alone having all in one set. Congratulations! Can’t wait to see what comes next.
