Yay, Just finished my MS $2.5 Indian set

PppPpp Posts: 510 ✭✭✭✭

Just wanted to share my journey in building this set.

I picked up two, one PCGS and one Ngc, 1911d strong d $2.5 Indians. My friend who collects pre-33 gold said I should get a complete set (something he always wanted to do).

Since I only seen one Ms set in the last five years and I already purchased the most expensive coin of the series I figured, why not.

The first decision was do I go PCGS or Ngc? I decided PCGS with minimum ms61 grade for every coin.

What I learned:
-it took a little over a year (which was faster than I thought it would be) to complete the PCGS set and I could have finished the set even faster if I went the Ngc route or lower my Ms 61 minimum grade
-1909 was the hardest coin to get and the 1914 was the second.
-for many coins ms61 or ms62 were very affordable vs. higher grades
-I had to pay up (ouch) to get the last few coins
-I ended up picking up a bunch of duplicates because I was focused on the series and the deals were good.
-I was never a big fan of $2.5 Indians but I now have a new appreciation for this coin and it was fun building this set

Here is my PCGS set:
1908 MS61
1909 MS61
1910 MS62
1911 MS61
1911D strong d MS61
1912 MS61
1913 MS62
1914 MS61
1914D MS62
1915 MS62
1925D MS64
1926 MS61
1927 MS62
1928 MS62
1929 MS63

Now i am trying to decide do I slowly upgrade each coin or sell the set and buy other coins or just keep it knowing you don’t come across Ms sets every day. Decisions decisions 🙂

You mentioned that you were never a big fan of $2.5 Indians - what do you usually collect?

Congratulations on a great set! One year is pretty quick. Do you have a registry link or some close up pictures?

Nice! Have you added the set to the PCGS Registry? Then we can browse Trueview pictures of the Gold Shield ones.

BTW I love these and the companion $5 coins for their true depiction of a Native American, akin to the Buffalo Nickel.

Your set is incomplete. Where's the 1911-D Weak D? ;)
    Seriously though, nice set!

    Congratulations!

I finished one of these sets about 35 years ago in a Capital Plastrics holder. The set is still raw.

Back then the common dates were selling about $200 each in "Unc-ish" condition.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have no coins listed in the PCGS registry set.

johnny010: I like green label PCGS holders for the history being about 30 years old. this is my green label Morgan cc set. My goal is to have each cc and key date minimum ms63. Yes, I will be making exceptions for certain coins like the 1889cc because I like being married. 😂 I have most of the key dates and the missing cc in the picture but in blue labels.

ChrisH821: I had the weak d but it was in a Ngc holder. In retrospect I should tried to cross it.

FYI: I think I will display the $2.5 Indian set at an upcoming show this weekend.
