CAC Submission: Guess the results

AvocetAvocet Posts: 262 ✭✭✭✭

I have sent several CAC submissions over the years. While my ability to predict what may sticker may have gotten a little better, the main lesson that I have learned is that accurately predicting the outcome of a review is tough.  Similarly, previous GTG exercises on this forum sometimes prove tough, but estimating CAC verification seems harder.  Whenever I put together a submission to CAC, I usually get together with my collector and dealer friends to make predictions, and we appreciate the learning experience that follows.

As others have done on the forum in the past, it may be interesting to ask folks to guess the outcome of sticking / verification for the following submissions. I have recently come across these coins from a collector who sent them to PCGS; they have never been to CAC.  These coins are not my typical collecting area, but each has been a quality fill for my broader collection.

I believe only some of these coins will be stickered, and I predict that two may succeed.

I know that in-hand inspection is needed to make the best assessment, but please guess for those who would like to take a stab from these tru-views.

I will post the results once the coins return from NJ in a few days.

Thanks for taking a look and for your comments about these coins.

I am particularly excited about the 1810 1c BN and hope it will pass.

I was inspired by @renomedphys recent post. There are many great coins out there that don't pass for various reasons.

Edit: Unfortunately with the TV quality, it's impossible to determine luster and true coloring but I gave it my best shot.

I think the merc will green sticker. No to all the others.

I personally think several of these would details grade if sent to cacg, but maybe the trueviews are the culprit still

I agree with the details potential, especially for one of these. The true views are an obstacle here for sure, as the luster, among other features, is hard to assess.

These were my exact thoughts. Not entirely outstanding coins. Mercury looks decent and has a chance.

Personally I don't see much eye appeal except in the Shield Nickel, the 20c quarter for the grade and the Mercury dime. I'd think they make a rigorous analysis where a coin on the edge may pass with them a grade or two lower but sometimes not due to surface issues.

I hope your 1810 gets stickered.
My guess is the 41-S dime and the shield nickel get stickers.
    Thanks for the thread.

First 3 green second 3 no (would be yes for the mercury dime but I think I might see a wheel mark on obverse)

    1. No - damage at 7:00; possible corrosion at 11:00 under the star
    2. No - surfaces look rather dull and lack luster;
    3. Maybe - the luster must carry the coin and confirm that all of the flatness is from a weak strike (some of it clearly is) as opposed to wear
    4. No - dipped out, possible old cleaning
    5. No - obverse hairlines
    6. Yes

I am also sending in a group and may have to put some in a thread like this.

Still no word from NJ, but hopefully soon.

Here are my guesses for these coins.

    1: No
    2: No
    3: Yes
    4: No
    5: No
    6: Yes

If these were to go to the Grading team, I suspect that CAC grading may designate the Barber and 20C as details, and maybe even others. It will be interesting to see what they do. The 1810 !c is my favorite of this lineup, and I have cautious hope on that one, but I think they will decline it.
