Never submitted to CAC, but JA on the CAC forum said the coin is overgraded as a VF30. I agree. Nice coins that are overgraded tend not to sticker.
Graded PCGS VF30. I see it as VF20-25. One of my favorite coins in my collection for its near perfect gray toning and surfaces.
On the other hand, I have a dipped and retoned coin with a small hit in the upper right obverse field that stickered I think because it was undergraded, IMO.
EF40 (IMO) graded as PCGS VF35 with CAC
I suspect this nice 1851 VF35 may not sticker because of overgrading, though I haven't submitted it to CAC yet.
PCGS VF35 - should be VF30 IMO to be conservative and sticker.
Rarity7 has a new youtube where he unveils these in the 20 to 30 range. JA wants full Liberty for 25 and up.
Thanks for pointing me to this excellent video.
At first, they mentioned VF25 must have full LIBERTY, later he says VF20 must have full LIBERTY. That greatly expands the range of "FINE" back to what it was decades ago. JA also likes to view XF as a single grade rather than two grades (Personal communication).
The 54-O goes from a VF35 to an F15?!. Wow! My flawless superstar circ 54-O gets a BIG demotion. PCGS got overly excited about this coin. Forget CAC, I'm going with a hologram L@@K! sticker for this coin.
PCGS graded this coin VF25. They also defended the grade on this coin here on the forums several years ago as being particularly choice for the wear on the coin. I'd grade it F15+/VF30 = VF20. The look is outstanding, IMO, with no hairlines despite a burnished circ cameo look. It will not sticker if LIBERTY must be full on a VF20. JA is saying this coin is a F15!
Beautiful coin, though.
Here's a well struck 1860-O AU50 CAC with spotting and apparent light cleaning/wiping. I've tinkered with the color to try to approximate the look in-hand (effort failed). I can only surmise that the grade AU50 was too low for this coin despite the evidence of light wiping.
AU-58 NGC. I have to assume that it’s been to CAC, but it’s a great fit for my set that is CAC-58 for the p-mints and a really nice looking 38-c in terms of strike, luster and color.
That 38-C is a fantastic coin! As others have said on the forum, CAC is tough on Charlotte gold.
Just a common 1923-D in PCGS 65 that didn't CAC, I assume the scratch through Liberty's lower leg was the cause but I love the look (and the issue in general) nonetheless.
I have a whole bunch of slabbed coins without CAC stickers, but they didn’t fail to CAC, they just were never submitted that I’m aware of. About 1/4 of them I submitted them myself, so I know for sure they weren’t sent to CAC and another 1/4 or so were purchased before CAC existed and I never sent them to CAC. But the other ones that don’t have CAC stickers that were purchased more recently MAY have been sent to CAC and didn’t sticker but I have no evidence of this.
I knew when I bought this coin that, given it's valuation, it had likely already been rejected by CAC. It has such impressive eye appeal that I had to buy it regardless (plus it's a semi-key date). I figured that maybe the color would be the reason it would fail, but I got a note from JA that underneath the toning, there is evidence of cleaning. This is important to understand and it does not change my ownership enthusiasm. It really is a stunner in-hand. AU58.
Neat thread. While I respect the bean, I've seen some that do not speak to me, and even a few I disagree with. I also disagree with a few that didn't get the bean.
But it IS all about the coin, and these didn't get one but aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

I have never sent a coin to CAC. I wish I could. Can anyone sign up or do you have to be a dealer?
Anyone can sign up. However, last I checked there was still a waitlist....so you may have to wait a bit before getting your membership. If you want to do it, better off getting on the waitlist asap.
