Ultra Rarity

CopperindianCopperindian Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just ran across this & thought it might be of interest. In the SB upcoming auction on 11/20, there’s this one:

It’s graded XF45 & has a CMQ sticker. There’s only 5 known of this 1849-C Open Wreath variety. I believe this one ranks #3. This is a definite deep pockets offering & too much for most of us. Still, the auction writeup is an interesting read!

Great coin, I've never seen one, even a picture, until now.

If the people who handled this coin a long time ago would have known how rare and expensive this coin would be one day, they’d have probably taken better care of it….😉

There may be a few Rarity Points here, but in this grade range it does not matter much.

Good question - I have no idea. It might rival the 1975 NoS PR67 10C listed on GC right now.

Put in my maximum (for me) bid, which should be far short. Or, I could get lucky? At the least, it will serve as an alert.

Very cool issue, though I’m more starstruck by the Vaquero in 3+. Can’t afford it unfortunately.

After a run of underwhelming auctions over the spring and summer, there are some very special and interesting coins in this auction.

I’m not sure how active I’m going to be on this one, but it’s not everyday you get a chance @ a pop 5 classic rarity. I’m sticking around for now.

If the over/under on the final winning amount (bid+premium) for the 1849 C $1 was $500,000, how would you bet?

I think I'd take the over.

Interesting! I really have no idea; for $500k+ hammer would have to be $420k or so. Really tough call but I’m leaning toward under (but not by much).

My expectations for the Horseman are quite a bit more than that, this is an issue where condition census examples have traded privately well north of the price guide.

I'm biting my tongue on this coin. I look at it as a common 1853 (I'm trolling to raise my LOL count) when deciding its grade and the condition of its surface. Nevertheless, what I think does not matter. If the coin had an "X" carved into its cheek it would not change how special it is.

PS The write up for the $10 blows me away. The writer deserves some kind of reward.

As far as historical significance and symbolism the Horseman wins by the same margin as Secretariats Belmont.

I agree with you except for one thing. I'll bet more people could use the dollar to fill out a registry set so rarity may Trump grade and historical factors when the bidding has ended. I'd rather have the Horseman but the dollar should always be a better investment for the future if you had to pick one.

Looks like November is Ultra Rarity Month.

HA has a 1870 CC $20 AU Filed Rims. Bidding hasn't started yet but will soon.

I imagine it'll go for more than the 1849 C $1 even if it is Details.

When you use the word “always” like that, there’s a good chance you’ll end up being wrong. That aside, there are plenty of buyers who pursue coins without any thoughts about registry sets.

Only time will tell us which coin might be a better investment. And of course, the outcome of any winning investment will be affected by what each coin sells for in the upcoming auction.

5 days left & the wagons are circling. Bid @ $132k but that’s just positioning. My guess is it hammers around $275k - that’s lower than some posters have predicted. Should be interesting!

@johnny010: today’s the day. Without revealing before the hammer strikes, all I’ll say is I’m giving it my best shot. I fully expect to be blown out, but if I’m not? It will be the absolute best bid I’ve ever made on any coin. And, it will be the best coin I’ve ever won/owned, especially from a historical/rarity perspective.

Listed in Greysheet at around $300K but impossible to know what it's worth except roughly. To be listed as "P.O.R." after sale by a dealer if not bought by a serious collector or for him by a dealer.

This one seems to be in the “serious collector” category. There have been predictions in the thread of over $300k. I’m sticking with the “under”.
