One of the great mysteries concerning Gobrecht Dollars is when were they struck? Some pieces were stuck in the year that’s on the coin, but a significant number of them were restruck in later years. Numismatists use die breaks and die rotations to try to pinpoint the year of manufacture.

I don’t know about you, but I find the word descriptions of the four Gobrecht Dollar die alignments confusing. Here are illustrations of the four alignments using slabs was a point of reference. Before you get too excited, I have only two Gobrecht Dollars. Pictures for alignments numbers 2 and 4 are Photoshopped.

Alignment #1

Coin turn (flip the coin "head over heals.) with the eagle flying "onward and upward."

Alignment #2

Medal turn (flip the coin on the vertical axis) with the eagle flying "onward and upward."

Alignment #3

Coin turn, the eagle is flying horizontally.

Alignment #4

Medal turn, the eagle is flying horizontally.

Everyone agrees that the 1836 Gobrecht Dollar with alignment #1 is an original issue piece that is among the 1,000 that were made that year. There are debates about the others, which we can discuss later.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible.
