A Mint State 1802 Large Cent, My Second "Big Purchase" at the Tampa Show

BillJonesBillJones Posts: 33,978 ✭✭✭✭✭

As a type collector, I am pretty much limited to upgrades these days since I have a complete type set up to 1964 as defined by the NGC Registry. This piece "spoke to me" as soon as I saw it. It is an 1802 Draped Bust large cent in PCGS MS-63, Brown, CAC. The coin has flawless brown surfaces, lots of mint luster and tiny hints of mint red on the reverse. It was an upgrade from the AU-58 I had in this slot.

This is an S-232, which is a very common Sheldon variety. It is in the lower end of the condition census. It is interesting to compare grading systems. This piece, as an MS-63 met my and CAC's expectations. Yet the "EAC grading system" calls it an AU-55. Before you get too excited, and EAC dealer will still charge you Unc. money. "If the alligators don't get you, the mosquitoes will." "There is no Santa Claus in numismatics."

Here is the piece that it displaced. Both pieces fit in my collection because I am working on a one a year date set of cents from 1793 to date.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Looks phenomenal! Certainly a notable upgrade, with the new coin a premium example altogether. Well done!

Great pickup Bill! Love them both but the new 1802 is a lovely piece!

That S-232 looks to be ex: Doug Bird, and if so, is graded as AU55 by Noyes and tied for finest known with three others.

I love the late die state.

    Beautiful coin.

The Gobrecht Dollar? Maybe. I spotted it on Thursday morning. It had been offered on the Internet, but I didn’t spot using that initially.

  • Both are great coins, but your newest purchase is fantastic.
Just roughly, is your new coin’s value about double your old coin’s value?
Purchase price isn’t my business, just wondering about relative price.

Great coin - the reverse cud is a nice bonus.

Have never collected copper so always find the EAC grading scale a mystery. Just what do they require to consider a coin uncirculated?

    Lovely, high-end, Large cent.

Glad that you still have room for the other cent that it replaced, as it is a different variation.

It's way more than double. Once you get to Mint State in this area, the prices go up geometrically for each MS grading point.

Price out an MS-67 Indian Cent to see what I mean.

Do you have a thread for the Gobrecht Dollar?
I missed it if you did

I don’t know how to link with an iPad within a website. The title is “A high grade 1839 Gobrecht Dollar.”
