@robec I’ve seen GreatPhotos of proofs on GC where the fields are lit up. Sometimes he’ll post two GreatPhotos of the same coin—one with fields lit and one without.
If Phil could have imaged this coin raw he would have had the fields lit up also. Because it’s a proof Phil wasn’t able to do that. It looks like the TrueView had the right idea. He didn’t do a good job cleaning up the image, the haze shouldn’t have been there. Color wise it is typical with TVs to be off. For a long time they favored a red tint…..now it’s yellow.
I think he was going for something like this.
Bob - the coin is not a Proof, so I don't think Phil would have went for the lit fields. It's a San Fransisco piece.

I have some coins that I would like to submit for grading and have Trueview photos of the coins taken. My submissions of late last year came back with Trueview photos of some of the coins being of very poor quality (not even close to what the coins look like in hand and very unattractive).
As a result I am reluctant to submit any additional coins for grading.
I certainly regret paying up for platinum.

Here's my latest reholder. Worst Trueview so far. I'm going rethink having reholders done, any maybe rethink raw grading also. I'm officially tired of wasting my money on this garbage.
Unsalvageable raw images there, I bet.
Maybe PCGS is just gonna send these photographers to summer seminar to learn? Idk. Hope they got a plan...
"It's like God, Family, Country, except Sticker, Plastic, Coin."
Seems like everyday I hear someone comment that they are waiting to send coins in for grading or re-holder until the images are fixed. PCGS has to be feeling it, by now.
Nothing is ever going to happen with the true views until it affects the bottom line and that's NEVER going to happen.
Everybody will still send in there coins for whatever service they provide, complain about the true views till the cows come home, but still accept what they get.
JMO, I really hope I'm wrong

I'm already thinking about a plan to sell some of my set, trade some, and move assets around to get back to more simple album collecting, which is what I prefer anyway. I'm tired of the TPG game. I think I'll take a break for a couple of weeks and think it through.

Doh!! I didn’t look close enough. I hope there are some decent alternate photos to pick from. Can’t hurt to ask.
For now I plan of sending most, if not all of my PCGS submissions economy so they don’t get Trueviewed. More than happy to pay the $10 service adjustment for coins that exceed $300.

On the contrary, myself and a bunch of others I've spoken too are not submitting anything until the photo situation is fixed.
PCGS "lost" half of my TrueView images on my last submission. It took me emailing them over and over to get an answer as to why they weren't showing up. They eventually offered to make it right, but it's too late.
The Trueview I was given only confuses me based on my photo selected from many taken which I feel best describes the coin . The Trueview photo's are embarrassing and well off the true view in hand. I really did not want to go there but maybe it needs to be said, then this thread crossed my desk.
Add me to the list of unsatisfied customers. My last couple submissions have had terrible photos. Rainbow commems that should be easy to capture looked dull and dark.
Holding off on any future submissions and seriously considering CACG

The Trueviews are embarassing?
I had to lookup the coin to see what I was missing. The top pop brown has a price guide of $2. The top pop variety in brown has a guide of $150. So this is probably worth less than face value because of the time and effort required to crack it out of the holder?

There is no longer a justifiable reason to pay the premium. Especially not when the images could potentially decrease your coins’ values or marketing potential. No impactful difference between TATs either.
I sure hope TrueViews get trued. I’ll still send my subs, but I’m going to be paying less to do so. It makes me sad what’s going on.
Having fun while switching things up and focusing on a next level PCGS slabbed 1950+ type set, while still looking for great examples for the 7070.
I sent this thread and another to Nat Turner and received a very thoughtful and constructive response. He asked for examples (where I linked this thread), and noted they were working on it.

I’ve summarized it above. Not a fan of sharing the specifics of a private exchange.
It would be cool if you photoshopped your photo of the half over the true view. After all your photo is the better image making it closer to a real true view of the coin.
I just received the TrueViews for 3 coins I sent in for regrade. Thankfully two of the coins were linked with their previous TV. The third coin, a 1913 T2 Buffalo, received its first. The good news was the coin was upgraded from MS65 to MS66.

Beautiful coin @robec and congrats on the well-deserved upgrade. It’s unfortunate to be paired with such a subpar photograph. Judging by the last few posted TVs, it doesn’t seem that any improvement in quality is evident.

I have a “476” that I just bought that was a mid five figure coin and it doesn’t look like a Phil image based on how nice in hand vs the TV.

Those Mercs TVs appear overexposed. The two problems I am consistently seeing is white balance off (yellowing effect) and overexposure.
That and the lights aren’t in the correct position to capture shadows that show depth and contours.

I have to say, the trueview of the 1877 looks like a perfect match to your in-hand photos.
I agree that is the least bad of the 3. However, the toning draws attention away from the flat, yellowish, lackluster fields.
