    It's been recolored.

Although we all have seen this in straight grade holders.

    PCGS is tougher these days.

I think you have some good advice. If you can sell it for what you paid or close to it, look for another. Especially now that you know what your looking for.

That's an interesting note on the color purple. I never thought of that as one of the colors that show up on AT. I will most likely be selling this in the future for a better example. I don't hate it, just somewhat ambivalent. Thanks everyone!

If you look on HA, as Bill noted, dark and questionable colors are not uncommon on these with NGC coins. It was probably reholdered so hard to determine anything from the prong holder.

I think they found the piece to be too dark, and they didn't find enough mint luster as a result. That was especially true for the obverse which is sort of the "bread and butter" side of the coin.

Oddly enough, I've seen silver coins that appear to be just as dark in auction house photos that got higher grades.

Photos are greatly improved, though the dark purple color concerns me and I understand why they didn't want to cross it. Whenever i see non uniform color like that on early coinage, my spidey senses tingle.

Please explain why the dark purple color concerns you, and why they didn't want to cross it.

It concerns me because it doesn’t look natural, and may be indicative of recoloring, or some other type of surface manipulation . It’s one of those things where I can’t necessarily explain it, but I “know it when I see it”.

Can I be certain that was the reason why they didn’t cross it? Not sure, but they’re was definitely something they didn’t like. The op coin reminds me of this coin which ended on GC last week. It sold for 32k against a greysheet bid of 40k, and other comps as high as 87k. This color looks like it was applied to the surface of the coin, in my opinion, hence why it might never escape its NGC tomb.

@PeakRarities I was watching that coin too, just to see what the final price was like vs graysheet was going to be like, and it also reminded me of the my dime.

I think this one should have crossed. At least based on those high res photos, it should have. Of course the graders had better than high res photos. Still, this is my thing with both these TPGs, they won't go on the line, they leave it a guessing game on what they could have been thinking. So, guess away. IMO, one has to be clairvoyant to figure this one out.

    I would say cleaned/altered surfaces
