Thanks for continuing to debate. I'll bet I am in agreement with you and just don't see the difference in the words you use.. Some coins with "defects" are detail graded and some are not. I guess it dependes on thegrader. I don't like the word "defect" because ALL COINS HAVE THEM resulting from various causes and many of these defects are not "problems."
Fair enough. I think it's important to have discussions abut terminology once in a while.
My position on this hasn't changed over these many years:
There will ALWAYS be a market for RARE "details" coins as the problem-free coins are far beyond the reach of the average collector
Many RARE coins are unknown in problem-free condition
As long as there are new collectors there will ALWAYS be a market for "details" coins as that they may be the only affordable coin in the series for the newbie

I just bought a multi-coin lot to get one coin (1767 Bolivia pillar 1R) I want which has been cleaned, somewhat more than lightly. It has choice AU detail measured by wear. I probably paid 10% or slightly more of the potential price of the very few that have similar level of wear but eligible for a numerical grade.
The other five are holed and I will dump it eventually with another two groups of holed coins. I bought both of those lots for one coin each too, scarcer and probably get a numerical grade on those.

A problem coin type set could be assembled somewhat cheaply. Then used as an educational tool.
