The pic shows that it's in a slab so they must think it's authentic.
Those scratches are hairlines which are normal for well circulated coins and are highlighted by the harsh lighting.
I'm guessing VG8 and straight graded.

I think the "hairlines" I'm seeing are artifacts of photography and the old cleaning has since retoned... I'm thinking straight graded G6... just misses 8...
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
VG Details, three letters in the headband show but there is clear evidence of a harsh cleaning.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

I remember years ago when someone commented that too much emphasis was placed on using the "LIBERTY" as a grading point for Liberty Nickels when the rest of the coin didn't measure up.
The "LIBERTY" grading point may have started with the Brown and Dunn book that was published in the 1960s. They stated, however, that if their grading criteria points were reached, it was assumed the rest of the coin would be consistent with the grade. That is not always true.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I'm guessing that coin shows more detail in hand than what we are seeing in those less than perfect pics.

Given current standards I'll say it's in a Fine holder.
Agree. Assuming the “scratches” are either on the holder or not as prevalent as they seem in the pics, I would have graded this a VG10+ but as stated above, today’s standards seem to call this F12 (though I would say it is the very lowest of F12 possible).

G06 details. But, given the teaser I'd venture G06 straight-graded.
Details.
I'm of the same mindset-looks to be a details coin that likely found its way into a problem-free holder.
FN12 straight grade.
Sometimes lighting on nickel shows "scratches" that are not as prevalent as seen.

I would have said G-6 straight grade.

Straight grade Good 6
VG08
I was thinking VG8; ear visible, etc. so legalistically it fits the bill, could have gone higher.
These do not wear well, why there are no poor1 graded Liberty nickels, not sure there are many fair2 either.

I would have graded it G-06
i would say they graded it by looking at both sides carefully
Good details
I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.
I’d be very surprised if the coin received a “harshly cleaned” details grade.

That was a gift!
I can only imagine the outrage if NGC had awarded such a grade to that coin.😉

A gift for the submitter, a wtf moment for most everyone else.
I would have graded it G-4.

No sticker for you
A gift yes, but a very hard sell at near that grade pricing, if at all, should you decide to sell.
