Wild and weird days finding CBH's - Coin #4 on the board
In the wild and weird days that are my life, I suppose I should expect something like what happened Tuesday this week.
I mean, what a perfect way to round out a group of crazy opportunities and stories throughout this year.
.
So, I had a project kick-off meeting for work out at the coast, and had asked my good friend @lkeigwin last week when the schedule firmed up if he wanted to have breakfast or something on Tuesday. He explained he’s been really, really busy with the holidays upcoming, family and things, and then getting ready to go to FUN this year … so he had to pass.
I drove over early in the am, did my meeting … which went well … chatted with the customers and our partners for a bit afterwards, and slid into the car for a long drive to another project site I needed to be at the next day. The meeting ended early, so I figured I was going to get a good jump on traffic.
.
A text from Lance was waiting on my phone. It had come in about 30 minutes prior.
“I’m going through my collection to decide what to bring to FUN and sell. I think it will be …
Three have stickers that say ‘Todd wants’ ….
I don’t have a list to give you yet. But I’m beginning to think you will have to plan a trip here. For a couple hours. Before FUN. And my calendar is packed …”
Huh. Well, it just so happens …
I texted back,
“What’s your schedule like right now?
I know that’s an absolutely crazy question and I wasn’t really planning to do it, but I just finished, and I’ve got about 3 hours to spare in between”
.
And so, the course of my day, and even my week, would change in the following two texts and the moments as I pulled from the parking lot.
.
Now, I have to say, I love my Brother Lance, but two hours is NOT possible for the two of us, no how, no way … not when he breaks out some boxes and we start talking coins, and I’m trying to make decisions on what to buy, and maybe taking mental notes on others for myself and a friend or two. And then the dogs are afoot, and wanting to say hi to Linda too …
But alas, we packed it in to just over three hours, which later felt like a whirlwind of moving pictures, caught in the camera eye … just speeding by … and by the time I left I had purchased 5, was contemplating 4 more, and I needed to get moving or I was …
Oh crap. I forgot how bad the traffic was!
.
Now, in retrospect, I was ill prepared for all of that, and probably should have stayed longer (if possible) and made more thoughtful decisions. Focused more.
Ready to upgrade and pass on my duplicates instead of look for special coins that really spoke to me, that I didn’t have yet. Ready to throw a little caution to the wind and drop more money than I did because I was scraping the bottom of the proverbial hobby money budget. Sometime opportunities call for exceptions, but, i wasn't quite in the right mind set.
Worse still, I probably should not have made the two calls I made on the drive from lance’s house to the next stop on my crazy week of travel. Here I was, trying to help a couple of friends with some ideas and get ready’s, and they sniped a few of the coins I was still considering. I may have to reconsider some of those friendships!! Not Lance of course, he’s a gem …
However, in the end, between those 5 coins, and agreeing to 2 more today, which we’ll have to figure out the handoff on (which may be another excuse for a trip!) I have once again buried myself in NEWP’s.
All because of a unique opportunity that presented itself, somewhat unexpectedly, and which would be hard to prepare for, even if I had known it was coming. Thankfully, I was at least paying attention enough to bring some beauties home.
.
Coins? Oh, you came for the coins?
Damn, and I thought you all came for my wonderful stories!
.
Well, okay then … I’m tired, but I will share one for tonight
.
Few coins strike me as intoxicating. It’s not a word I use around coins much. But this coin is all of that, and then some.
Remember I said I wasn’t looking for upgrades. Well, that didn’t work on this one. While I really like the AU50 I bought recently, a lot, this girl had me lost in her beauty and entirely smitten.

You had me at golden ale.
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
That's a beautiful coin, congrats! Can't wait to see the rest.

You have had a Hall of Fame year, but now I have Rush going through my head non-stop (hey, that's not a bad thing) with this fragment from your post-

I love this coin story! Sooo much like my mind works…
Lovely coin to boot… thank you for relaying this as it perhaps helps me think i am not as crazy as i believe…
A deep addiction is hard to beat, Pursuit! Love the dramatic build up. Beautiful coin!

While I’m not a collector of CBH, I can certainly appreciate why you fell in love with her. Congrats.
@TomB sometimes song lines run through my head when I'm writing, and as a long time Rush fan as well, that was an easy lob for you. Glad you saw it!
Also, I forgot about someone ... @HillbillyCollector He's always trying to guess the grade, so I'll show the next coins without grading notes, just attribution.
.
I was trying to Bust my two friends a little (see what I did there? ) in the first post, but honestly, a great part of collecting is sharing the hunt and the chase, the knowledge and the comradery, and then knowing we all came away with a prize.
Maybe I should have bought more, focused on my collection more, or decided not to share certain parts with the other ... but in the end, I think we all got a few great coins, and even though I will regret not buying a few more BEFORE the calls, I don't think I would change anything.
The universe works in mysterious ways, even when sometimes I feel like I have fallen into the twilight zone ...
.
Anyway, as I was leaving and really stuck in long, sitting traffic I talked out a text, and then added a couple of snippets about some coins I had seen, depending on who I was sending the note too. These are both fellow collectors that I have talked and texted a fair amount with.
"My day took a turn for the interesting.
You need to make sure your checkbook is ready. I'm telling you, you need to make d*** sure you have as much money as you can possibly have ..."
In addition to the texts, both called and we talked a bit in the three and half hours I spent driving.
I'll let them reveal themselves and share their spoils in their own due time.
.
I don't know what it was about this one. I really don't. I looked, looked again, and again ... and put her in the "ask for price" pile. Unless the price was silly (it wasn't) she was coming home.
Tough Die marriage? Nope. Difficult date? Not really. And yet, something about those nearly mark free surfaces and that dusky, antique bronze tone that just pulled me in.

Fantastic story.

Those are two great looking additions to your outstanding set. I bet the others are exceptional as well.
I bet the friend (now disowned ) that talked to you for over 2 hours while you drove feels very lucky and is very appreciative of that call!! I bet he added some exceptional coins to his very small collection of CBH's that started in early September A collection that started with seed coins from your stash.

@pcgscacgold I decided not to disown that friend quite yet. I figure he owes me, and so I'm going to ride him for all it's worth. I decided he'll have to figure out a way to get out of the friend "obligations" that might be forthcoming.
The good thing about doing it that way is I can show the other friend how to properly display his gratitude as well.
.
Here's another one that was hard not to love. Just a pretty, lovely toned example, nearly mark-free with some nice thin cracks.

Thanks Todd.
2 beautiful CBHs! On the O-110, I am thinking AU55-58 and if I was really being pinned down, I think it too is a 58!

Congrats on picking these up, for sure!
Nice trio.

Thanks guys. Sorry I got off track catching up with Christmas chores. For those following along, here was the big second prize of the day (not that the 25 and 26 aren't lovely coins).
For whatever reason, I have never found a Large 8's '28 I liked, not that this variety comes around very often. Like the 28 Curl Base 2 varieties and the Small 8's / Small Letters variety (O-119), the large 8's are just much less common than the Small 8's.
Like the 24/1, but for different reasons, I was smitten. It was instantaneous, and powerful. Just one of those ... Oh. I've been looking for you moments.
Between those two coins, I probably overlooked other coins in the mad rush.
Not Rush the band, but rush, the screaming Red Barchetta that I seemed to be driving through this whole episode!
Funny side note. My audiobook for the week was My Effin' Life by Geddy Lee. Yeah, really!
Another Easter egg for my friend @TomB
.
This one also was at one time in a higher grade PCGS holder. I am not sure which grade fits, but I'll take her how she is, and be damn happy to have her.

The 1828 is absolutely a "How YOU doin'?" coin! Love it but have loved all of them so far!
Those are 3 superb coins!
Congrats on all of them.
I think that ‘28 O-109 is a AU-53.
Hey wait, I'm Tom G
I do like Rush though

@Herb_T I didn't buy Lance's Pincer 8's if that's what you are asking, but I know who did.
I already have a killer P55 I crossed from N55. I've had mine for a couple years almost.
