The First Five Slots Of Your V Nickel Album

OAKSTAROAKSTAR Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

If you have one, let's compare the first five slots (empty or full) of our Liberty Nickel albums. I'm guessing these first five slots set the theme for the rest of your album. I'm interested in the look.

I like consistent looking sets/albums. I was actually thinking about down grading the 83 no cents to make the coin match the rest of the album. The look of a VG coin next to a mint state coin never really appealed to me. My personal requirements for this series were: full liberty and problem free. The 83 no cent also has an interesting history.

Slabbed collectors need not apply. 😉 Although, I'm interested in your thoughts.

You have an admirable goal. Finding an 1883 No Cents Nickel in the mid circulated grades is hard, I think. I have one my parents bought for me in a group of Liberty Nickels in 1962. I have not seen another one, but then again, I’ve never looked for one. Oddly enough that one has some gold residue in the letters. It hasn’t been cleaned.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

That's not a bad set of five. Your no cent is confirming our theory so far.

Here are a couple from a collection I photographed a few weeks ago (not my collection yet).
I don't think I have an 1885 or 1886 in my actual collection.

It was, but I sold it.

Here's mine. The 1883 I purchased and it too is better than the rest. All of the album, sans 1883 no cents, were collected from circulation back in the 50's and 60's. My set is complete but not great in grades, for sure. All very worn out as would be expected from circulated nickels 80 years later.

My local coin dealer had at "20 coins for $15" bin which was usually stocked with Lincoln wheaties, common date buffalos, VG 1900's Indians, Canadian coins, common BU Jeff's and AG-VG Liberty V Nickels. I decided to see how many slots in a Harris folder I could fill from just this bin, I was able to fill 22 of the 33 slots in AG3-G4. I finished off the set purchasing the rest in the same grade/condition including 85 & 86 in PCGS G4.

Always felt that was such a great way to fill slots. 👍 👍

    https://www.pcgs.com/news/story-behind-the-1883-no-cents-liberty-nickel

"Meanwhile, collectors today are as fascinated as ever by the saga of the 1883 No “CENTS” Liberty Nickel, a coin that serves as both a first-year type coin and also a one-year-only type coin. While only 5,474,300 business strikes were made, along with 5,219 proofs), the 1883 No Cents Liberty Nickel is far more common (and affordable) across most of the grading spectrum than its later 1883 With “Cents” counterpart due to the aforementioned hoarding of the No “CENTS” type from the get-go."

I don't have any in my collection, but whenever I work with another collector on this series I tend to recommend adding a racketeer nickel as a bonus piece. And if I have one handy, I'll show an out-of-print Whitman folder that had a spot for the 1913 for fun.

That is the embossing from the front folder design. You can read "NICKEL" backwards in the first set of holes.

I only have the 1884 and the 1887. Unfortunately, the two in between have not showed up in my nickel boxes. :|

Does anyone have a gold plated version?

  • OAKSTAROAKSTAR Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Has a Racketeer ever been certified? I looked at some pop reports. Unless I'm missing it, I don't see any. Besides, could a TPG'er confirm if the nickel was plated 140 ago or yesterday?

I don't own many V-nickels, but I like them. I would love to build a set one day.

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

It might be possible by analyzing the characteristics of wear on the plating. Some of the racketeers were given reeding on their edges too and that could be another point to examine.
