What do you do when you “hit the wall” - when upgrading starts to become cost-probitive?

Start a low ball set of the same coin.

Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc

  • Once I've decided what new set I want to collect I set a grade I want, for example MS63 for Peace dollars. I have two more to go and once finished it will be, in my opinion, a nicely matched MS63 set. However the devil on my shoulder often says, why not go a grade or two higher! Temptation must be managed!

Not meaning to criticize (really), but I am just mystified at the allure of collecting incredibly worn coins, and paying a premium for them (since there seems to be some competition for the lowest-ball copies).

I have no problem with people collecting whatever they want to collect, but this one is hard for me to understand.

    YMMV, apparently.

What to do? Send all of your coins in for regrade and maybe you'll get lucky on some of them, get trueviews (if you don't have them already), fresh matching slabs, and publish your digital album.

My full Peace dollar date set is at PCGS getting Reconsidered (for CAC approved coins) or Regraded (non CAC). Frankly I’m not expecting any upgrades, I just wanted a sense of “finality” with the complete set. I’m sure some would find that an imprudent use of funds, but doing so is keeping me productively engaged with a set I put a lot of effort into building.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

WOW, just thinking what a major task that would be. With over 575 coins in my bucket, probably 450 or so would have to be sent in............$$$$ and then back to CAC for the sticker $$$$$$$
First I'd have to decide weather to send them in for re-grade or reconsideration..............

Not necessarily to pay more. But finding lowballs on some sets can be more challenging than the high sets. Plus, it's more affordable paying a premium or not. To each their own.

Reconsideration is better if you have an old holder. I know someone at one of the major auction houses who screens my few potential submissions re reconsideration / upgrade / stickers. That said, I have maybe 55 slabbed coins, and have intentionally limited my purchases over the years.

Once I ran into this problem I decided that I won't start a set unless I feel I have the means to finish it to my satisfaction. That also means I'll probably never attempt some of the larger denomination sets until my budget goes up significantly.

55 coins is doable, not 450 or so
Then here's another thing if using reconsideration, if the coin gets an upgrade then it gets a new holder, if it doesn't then it stays in the same holder but I want a in holder true view.
How would you explain that to PCGS when others here have had problems just getting coins graded
    Still have a headache............. :/

  • I used to collect cans for recycling, then use that money to pay for coins at the local shops or shows or from catalogs. I have no idea how many coins I purchased with stacks of $2 bills from the recycling center.

The first wall I hit was a 1921 Walker; I had both the 1921 Peace and 1921 Morgan but not the elusive half. My local shop would find one for me of course, but there was no way I could recycle enough cans to possibly afford one I liked — I didn’t and still don’t like slick walkers. That was in the early to mid 90s — I still don’t have a nice 1921 walker. I don’t consider it a wall, just something I’m still collecting cans for…

Realistically you’d have to submit as separate orders. They just aren’t set up to handle that kind of order logic.
