That would definitely be it, BobaFett was on that without question and obviously some of the other names listed were as well
I remember lsutigers1973. His "road trip" thread on Trading Cards, I think was one of the most entertaining threads ever on CU.
He and a buddy traveled a bit of a distance, I think it was a day or two, to pickup a basement full of cards. Which if I'm remembering right, the owner was giving it away for free.
Turns out it was virtually all, if not all, junk wax. They knew it was a lot of junk wax going there. But the two guys were hopeful there might be some big winners hidden in there. Unfortunately there wasn't.

A wasted trip, but a very fun thread.
that sounds like a fun thread. it must have predated me. I would have loved to read through it!!
He came back after a long absence but disappeared again.
I know all the PSA castaways had a pretty active private forum years ago, I was there for a bit but it was too much so I got away from it, not sure if it's still going or not
AKA "open forum refuge". Is that what you are referring to?
No, the Open Forum Refuge, if that's the right name for it, I'm not sure, was started mostly by the coin guys, because the CU "Open Forum" as it was called back then, which allowed almost any sort of chat, got closed for various reasons.
Pondering it a little more, I think Matt's forum may have been called "Cardboard Talk", not 100% sure.
I have heard of this "open forum" a few times here and there. from what I can gather, it sounds kind of like the wild west of CU? I am absolutely positive I would have raised some Cain in there. It is probably a good thing it was gone before I came around.
I am not sure when the open forum closed, but I think I have been a member here for about 10 years or so, and I lurked for a couple of years before I joined. I have posted on forums for decades, but from around 2001-2012 or so it was mostly on various firearms/reloading forums. I then transitioned over to more sports-related stuff.

It's a shame a number of the pics are no longer there.
The pickings turned out to be a little bit better than what I remembered. But keep in mind this was over 14 years ago, and cards have appreciated significantly since then. So my comment about the "wasted trip" was based on the values back then from my point of view. Factoring in the expense of the trip, plus the meager potential profit listing those cards on Ebay at that time.
However upon reflection, I wouldn't now call it a wasted trip. 😊
@craig44 said: @stevek, I just checked this thread again. thanks for the link. going to read through it now!
Keep in mind the posts aren't going to read like the literary skill of a Tom Clancy novel. But it's the anticipation of what's going to happen next, is what made the thread so enjoyable.
Spoiler alert - the amount of cards was astonishing. Those pics are still there. And thinking about it further, 14 years later, if Bill held on to those cards, considering that I think some valuable variations and such may have been found since then, possibly in those cards, then there actually could be some decent winners hidden in there after all. 😊
@darin I am revising my (in)famous theory regarding my approach to this game.
To review, I had previously said that the most important thing to do is to play well and to come out of the game confident. However, I did provide scenarios where losing would be advantageous.
I am amending that due to the specifics of this game. My theory applied best to the Patriots. In this case, both the Eagles and Chiefs need the victory to help them on their paths to the number one conference seeds.

I just finished. What a great read! I felt like I was experiencing it with them. I would love to see a horde like that in person. I liked seeing pics of the guys with the collection. I also liked reading some of the old names I had forgotten about. time flies. This thread predates my lurking of the forum by a year or two so I did miss it originally.
thanks again steve. I enjoyed it so much i actually commented on it and brought it back to the top after 14 years because i think it would be a fun read for many forum members who missed it the first time around.
I don't particularly enjoy doing this. Taylor seems like a very nice girl. However my Eagles fan club membership requires me to do as much as possible to jinx the other team whenever the Eagles play them. So I'm hopeful this pic is what Taylor looks like after tonight's game, from pulling out her hair in frustration when the Chiefs lose.
As I suspected, it’s a bad night for the Eagles. This might be the beginning of what the Dallas fans have wanted all season. Dallas has the easier schedule. So it goes.

It was the drops, but there are other problems too. At the same time, I think the Chiefs are still prime contenders.
If Scant catches that, and if Chiefs score, and if they win, the Eagles fans would be finding a huge list of things to complain about too. How about that drive before the Chiefs got it back? Start there.

I don't think there would have been many complaints, if hardly any. Coming into Arrowhead, and trying to defeat the Super Bowl champs when they are rested after a bye week, is not normally a game that a road team is expected to win.
An Eagles loss would have still had their record at 8-2. There wouldn't be much complaining about that.
even after last night, I still think KC is the top of the heap in the AFC right now. It is a really tough loss at home after the bye, but there really just isnt that much competition in the AFC this season. There is the Ravens, but Lamar would have to have the game of his life for them to beat KC in my opinion.
BTW - on Eagles talk radio after the game, they stated there was possible news of a Taylor-Kelce split.
Whether that is true or not, I have no idea and can't think of anything on the planet I couldn't care less about. But I thought it might be important to those here who have a crush on Taylor, to know that she might be available again soon. Tell her you're a billionaire's son, and she will return your phone call. 😆
As I said in the other thread, how can the "drops" be such a glaring problem without even mentioning the Int that Mahomes threw in the endzone and the fumble by Kelce at the 10 yard line?? Take your pick, 14 points, 10 points or 6 points, but those two plays lost the game as surely as anything else.

you are right. there were lots of miscues last night. The Kelce fumble was a game changer. The Mahomes Pick was pretty bad as well. underthrown off the back foot
Sometimes I think that as fans we overlook how much a really good team defense can affect a really good team offense. Both teams have outstanding players everywhere and overall really good teams. That accounts for some of the mistakes. I'm actually surprised when I watch the Chiefs because in the past the focus has been on Mahomes and the passing game, but this season the overall team seems much better. Their run game is solid and the defense is, too. I was sort of surprised how much pressure they were able to put on Hurts.
Lester Hayes, I believe. Many years ago I met him while he was walking around at a sports card show at a mall in Phoenix, Az. He was not signing. Just walking around looking at cards like a regular customer. I did not ask to shake his hand for obvious reasons. Was afraid we would become attached.

KC is still the team to beat, period. Buffalo went into KC 2 years in a row and beat them in the regular season. Doesn’t mean sh$t.
Sure Baltimore is riding high but Jackson barely escaped another season ending injury as he was able to slide his foot out of a hip check tackle with only a slight sprain. That tackle on artificial grass would be season ending. Don’t forget he missed the back half of the last 2 seasons. Can he stay healthy.
Any team can put it all together. If Buffalo beats Philly, has a bye and beats KC they’re back to Superman status. Never count out great quarterbacks.
W.C.Fields "I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.

I cant really disagree but Kelce is showing his age, the WR's are just not dependable when it comes down to it. I think KC will be there in the playoffs but you got some weird teams like Denver, Cleveland and Houston that could sneak up on them. Jax is starting to warm up too

Buffalo will not beat Philly. They simply don’t have it them this year. They are not among the truly elite teams.

In all fairness, she's not at the game tonight, so perhaps that's the reason why it's not working. 🤔

Jeez, the "receivers" for the Chiefs have now been reclassified as the "droppers" - pitiful.
