Frankenstein screw. It was struck on a screw. What we win 🏆
Does this thread count ?
WHAT ?
That screw looks like it may have fallen out of a piece of mint machinery.

Wow, bet that really screwed up the die.
Is it still worth a penny?

Stainless steel metal screw? Why is there copper showing through?

Copper from the planchets gets imparted on the dies.

I had that thought. That screw may have needed some help to make its way into the coining chamber.

Sure it did, just like a nail fell out of the mint machinery and into the coining chamber.

I don't know what it looks like in a slab but they actually weighed the screw??? That must make it official!!

Where did you get your nails done? At the mint of course! 🤪
Put the two together and you have a screw nail. lol
Wayne
Kennedys are my quest...
These were intentionally done at the Philadelphia Mint around 2000–2001
I believe there are two or three of these struck Dimes on finishing nails, and the one in the PCGS holder was the one I sold in the Chicago ANA approximately 15 years ago and then appeared in the Heritage auction six months or so later.
I purchased this from Fred and sold it to a customer.
I would be curious to see the coins struck afterwards and the interesting die marks that must have been left.
I'm wondering if some of these were struck, knowing the dies were at the end of their life or ready to fail.

That's exscrewcient to look at!
It would make sense if what Fred said was the case in that they were done on purpose. If a bunch of the subsequent coins made it out into the world there would have been news about it.
"Hey yall, watch this!"
If a bunch of the subsequent coins made it out into the world there would have been news about it.
What news exactly would talk about it??
Nonesense - so what if it's magnetic - it Sure wouldn't be able to to exit the coining machine!
Evidence to establish there was a screw loose.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
How come the screw wasn't flattened?
No one is suggesting that this was found in a roll of Lincoln Cents.
More info is in my listing, including how intentionally made mint errors got out, and Fred Weinberg’s video by PCGS.

Always enjoy Fred's discussions. 👍

Yes, that’s why I include Fred’s video in any listing of mine where the coin was an intentionally struck mint error.

And just like that, there goes another perfectly good thread!
