Let’s crack Todd up

BustDMsBustDMs Posts: 1,636 ✭✭✭✭✭

My buddy Todd loves die cracks. Show you cracked coins. I’ll start with a famous one with more to follow later.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

    Thanks OAKSTAR.
There are so many nice cracked examples in the CBH series it's hard to know where to begin.
    CBH version of scarface....

I have something like this. Let me go find it. Maybe you can tell me what it is.

Hey OAKSTAR, when a die breaks the break can be catastrophic for the die. Sometimes the
break is so severe it actually displaces the height of the striking surface on either side of the break.
In other words the die is at 2 different levels. Thus when the coin is struck the strike is different on
either side of the break not just a crack on the die retaining its plane. Look at the 1795/1795 reverse
I just posted as an example of a severe break. Look at the difference between the words UNITED and STATES.
They were struck by the same die but the die itself was damaged to the point of not being level any longer,
hence the struck coin has the effect of the uneven die strike. Same as can be seen on the left wing facing. Your coin shows the same effect.
    Hope that made sense.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Thanks Pnies20, I forgot to label mine.
Hey robec, I would say that is a crack looking at the internal small cud that formed between the eye and the ear.

    Here's a decent modern.

Looks like a cud would not be far behind.

I was thinking the same thing @BLUEJAYWAY. Would liked to have had a few more examples that showed it's progression.

My Huskies won today ... what an instant classic game that was! The Ducks are one hell of a good football team this year too ... to the Duck fans, we'll see you again in December I bet.

    And then this. So cool.

Here's one with a little purple ... just because I need to lord over those Quackers and say ... Bow Down!!
