GTG - REVEALED One of the Trickiest Morgans I've Ever Seen

FlyingAlFlyingAl Posts: 3,046 ✭✭✭✭✭
edited September 24, 2023 1:27PM in U.S. Coin Forum

I was contacted recently by a well established collector who wishes to remain anonymous who wanted me to image this particular piece. I was given permission to do a GTG, so good luck!

Wow, the luster pops on that baby!
Edited to add: after another look, I’m going with 67-67+.
    Great looking coin!

Well, like @MFeld my initial impression was "better than 67+", so if that's a possibility I would keep it at 68+. I don't even see a hit or a hairline on the coin anywhere, and it looks like its screaming with luster. I don't know what would hold it back from 68 unless it was graded 30 years ago or if the images were deceptive.

MS 67...the picture looks like a 68 but I'm hedging (plus this isn't a date you tend to see even in 67 let alone higher)

Very nice, I'll go 68. Edited to add, I didn't see 67+ was the highest grade for that date.

I want to say 67 or 67+ because of the date/mint but based on the photos I don't see any reason it shouldn't be a 68.

    I'm going to say 68

    Why so low?
I’ll go with 67+, and would have guessed higher if any had graded higher.

Cheek looks weird, like rubbed with a sock? I’ve seen this look on gold before and it normally deducts 1 point. Reverse eagle has a few problems/ticks as well. The somewhat strange lighting in the photo doesn’t help.

Pops are updated every working weekday at around midnight pacific time, so unless this thing was graded and returned and photographed on a Saturday, current pops should be accurate.

With that eye appeal it has to be a plus, so I will agree with 68+. Wow, what a gorgeous Morgan.

Without reading the replies, I thought the image looked like a MS68, so will stay with that.

That is a superb Morgan Dollar. I would guess the grade to be 69.

My gut is that this is a trick post and there is a microscopic patch of hairlines we can’t see in the photo. That could also just be my cynicism.

Based on what we see, if this had been an 1881-S, I would have guessed MS69. Since it is a better date, I would have said 68 or if the graders were particularly harsh 67+ without cheating.

I believe I see a bag mark on the reverse (approx. 4 o'clock position) between America and Dollar, as well as a few on the obverse lower throat area.
If the coin appears to be a 68 to many here, there must be a reason why it's not registered as a 68. I'm then going to say a Details/ Questionable Color.

The angular second picture or "reveal" tells the tale of the grade. Totally AU

    , but a nice coin.

The GTG is an MS 65 coin "purple is dried dip residue" Again another nice coin

68 was my guess. But if 67+ is the highest, it must be that.

    I have a 67+ but this looks cleaner. :o
