and you knew you’d get an honest answer, what question would you ask?

I have heard some dealers get special treatment (with a certain grading firm) in they are allowed to request a specific grade on a crossover they submit that is above the encapsulated grade, unlike us regular collectors who can't.
Do the graders, specifically the finalizer see who has submitted a coin for grading?
You only get one question.😀

Do you actually make money doing this...??
Are you really selling this $1000 coin for only $50 over your cost?

To the owner of the large auction house. Do you regret selling wizzed coins earlier in your career?
Seeing one guys piles of binders of raw collector coins in 2x2 - are these getting better margins than the slabbed stuff?
Why don't you like W quarters?🤣😂
What is your best price?
Yes. Way better. Way, way better.
And, just to be clear, it's justified....a lot more effort buying, processing, pricing, carrying around and having precious table space/time consumed.

Earlier this year I bought a huge collection of off center and minor mint errors.
In our negotiations, I knew the price range I was willing to pay and the seller knew the price he wanted ( altho he told me he had no idea of how much it was worth).
Once I gave my quote, he told me what he wanted. We split the difference in price. In the negotiation I explain just how much work it would be for me to sell all of those coins. He laughed and said "I know it is a lot work."
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Ummm... so what's your QUESTION?🙄
Why do some people on this forum refuse to learn anything?
where is the smart money going at the moment? Seems like there are so many transactions between dealers prior to shows that the dealers already have a good sense of what is trading well and what showed little to no interest. For Joe Public who comes in off the street, that would be good knowledge to have going into a show.
I like that one!
And while I’m not sure what’s the best advice I’ve ever received, I’ll tell you what I think is the best I’ve given - patience. That one word can serve collectors very well in all facets of collecting.

Yes and no.
You must know when to throw patience out the window and buy the second you see something uniquely rare.
You are both correct. I have really reached to buy something that I knew was unique, when it came up, and I wasn’t even ready. But also, as per what @MFeld said, I have passed on a lot of things, when I knew they weren’t satisfactory, even though I was anxious to fill that hole. Slow and steady will always win the race.

Why are you a coin dealer instead of just a coin collector ?
Surprised I must be the only one here who feels this way but my local shop owner is REALLY fair and honest. We talk all the time and I think he is always truthful...
Mark
I was forced into it as I had no other options.
I'm fairly confident that Mark intended everyone to ask a hypothetical question of dealers in general or maybe even a specific dealer that someone had in mind. I don't think the intent was for you to answer on behalf of every dealer in existence
And to answer your question about why some people refuse to learn anything (despite your question probably being rhetorical), perhaps some of us are willing to learn things if we trust the source trying to impart that knowledge/wisdom.

I’m not a dealer but I want to share this advice with the group:

That is great advice and I can see why.
Those who can should heed it.

No. I bid on one but was the underbidder. But, all my early dates have performed, very well, from a price-wise perspective.

How can my coin be an MS62, but when you buy it and resell it the same coin becomes an MS65?
And vice versa.
It wouldn't do you any good since it easy for the coin dealer to just change the combination on his safe after you leave. It's like giving someone your password and then you just change it.

I couldn't agree more. There's actually a few in the area I never waste my time with... nor would I try and spend the time to cajole a truthful answer from them.

If someone offered you 85% of retail, would you sell all your coins and move on from the hobby?
Who are the dealers that have bounced checks on you or otherwise have owed you money for an appreciable amount of time?

Would you give them 85% of retail on EVERYTHING they own? I most likely would take a pass.
