Anyone bid in Bass?
I honestly wasn't really following, but the prices on my watched list seemed pretty strong.

Was seriously considering going after one lot, but decided to sit it out. It looked like it might close way under where I thought it would so I was about to hit the “cut bid” button, but then bidding erupted and it went way out of my comfort zone.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
I also was very close to hitting bid on a couple items. In the end it would not have mattered. Each coin received several more bids. Mike Sadler, the auctioneer, was very entertaining. I watch Heritage auctions just for his performance.

Was this a live auction at the show?
Yes, it was on-site at the ANA. I watched the stream on HA.com.

I didn’t bid but I watched the fathead $5’s being sold and it was very entertaining.
Nice! I would have made the trip just for the live entertainment from Mike. The FUN auction was a blast to watch and be part of.
My wife heard me streaming the last auction and knew it was Mike just from the voice. She finds him entertaining as well.

Agreed @Proofmorgan —that January FUN was my first live auction and it was a riveting experience with that auctioneer.
In a world where so much as moved digital, I think Heritage should take the show on the road more often. Many newer collectors have never experienced a live auction, and it’s a cool part of the hobby. It’d be a boost to their brand IMO. I even saw a video of last night’s auction posted on Reddit (in r/coins).
They have increasing competition for the online auction market share and this would be a way to set themselves apart.
Plus it was nice to pick up my winning lot THE NEXT MORNING rather than wait weeks for shipping.

I wouldn't have enough money to buy an 1853 gold dollar or a 1932 eagle in that collection, if those coins were offered in this sale. That sale is for well healed dealers and ultra rich collectors.
I have had a couple of Bass coins crop up as offers from dealers who have my email address. One piece was priced at over $2 million. Frankly I thought that the grade on it was a bit generous, but since I am too small of dog to run with that pack, it was a view from afar.
I watch on my PC
I commented on Mycollection that I really enjoyed watching the 1 piece that sold over 4 Milion and the very next piece Mike had to auction off a was lower value net graded piece that started at 2 k ... fun to just watch his reaction to try and make that piece just as exciting ... Should have a playback provision to rewatch

PS
I did bid on a couple of patterns and won one. Patterns also appear very strong ... The piece won was my last one I needed in a series that I had focused on and was willing to go higher. It even might be the last pattern I collect ... So when does one Realy know when they stop acquiring pieces. In any case, I may post the details when I recieve it in the mail

I did win a few. But I was outbid on some key issues. The prices were weak for some rare $5 die marriages and rare $2.5 gold.
Yes, some of the transitions were humorous to watch. Not every coin can be a showstopper, I suppose.
Congrats! Very much hope you share here. Love seeing any and all patterns. There were some great ones last night.

Interesting reading this. Why?
Going back many years auctions were live and no internet. They usually had some decent activity but if a 'big' sale was to happen, then it could be much more active or an event with the room full and SRO and much talk about it.
Fast forward - the internet becomes more and more of a bidding thing. It reaches the point were it is similar to today. That is can bid with much confidence from multiple places and means.
As this happens the live auction attendance starts to diminish. Dealers and collectors at shows would often go to their hotel rooms to bid. Why? Because the internet bidding was reliable and while waiting for 'your' lot to come up, can relax, talk, have a glass of favorite beverage and/or work on upcoming lots, make a phone call and on. The auction room attendance was sometimes minimal.
When covid came around the auctions moved to the home site of the auction house. I am guessing there might not have been to much of drop off in bidding due to the internet bidding system. When shows started back up the auctions started happening the week after the show. Shows had/have the auction lot viewing for them.
With this system the auction house does not have to transport their entire auction room system and staff to the show and get a room and get everything connected, checked out and working. Also there are not auctions going on during the time while the show bourse was open.
One thing I have noticed is that at Heritage the FUN or ANA or other type of auctions do not have has many lots as years past. I believe this is due to the increase in other weekly auctions, the specialty auctions and auctions of the collection of ABC and similar miscellaneous auctions. This could mean if the auction were held on-site again that there would be less auction time during the open show. Don't know.
Also some like having the auction the following week because they can view lot at the show and then do work on the lots to determine bids later.
With all of that, I agree that an on-site live auction should be something to benefit the collecting community. Make a show more of a total event for some. Don't know if it is worth it overall to all involved. Might depend on the attendance and popularity of and maybe increased results. Maybe there will be some more single event auctions like Bass to test it out.
PS - Yes Mike is fun/good. Scratch your nose and lose $100K. The YN pool together to buy one lot.

I’m not familiar with prices in those series but they also seemed low to me. Some of them sold much lower than price guide.
I really love a live auction but have never been to a live coin auction.
I went to a RE auction one time and they had a drawing at the beginning of the auction. My dad won and received 5 Peace Dollars!
Nada for me but it could have helped stoke the fire for collecting. Then again maybe not, as I have never bought a Peace Dollar!😀
