Would you buy this?

Flawed question. What about if it was your money?

Here, I just gave you the money, virtually . Now are you gonna buy that coin virtually, or spend it on something else? ;)

In that case, I just bought the TrueView. Seems like a virtual bargain. ;)

I'd certainly consider it... It is a neat piece of history.

That looks like a small planchette pine tree shilling to me. If it is, and is not some super rare die variety, I would say no.

The small Pine Tree shillings were struck on a screw press and were generally well made. You can do better than this. You could plunk down the $3,500 and find out a week later that a better struck one was available for $4,500.

I had that happen to me this week. I got frustrated and plunked down $900 for an 1823 large cent in VF-20. As soon as I get home, I find that a dealer I know has a much better one in a VF-30 for $1,800. Too late! The commitment has been made. The better coin sold in a couple of days as well it should have.

    @BillJones

And the coin could also sell and he not find a better option.

I’d never call 300 a lot when comes to a well known piece of history. This coin is on my list and no one here is asking what it is.

I think it’s worth owning at the mentioned price.

I'd prefer gold or silver, but for almost 400 years old.
    If it's cheap enough.
$3500 well I would spend that amount of money on something else.

I agree with @BillJones . I had a similar situation happen to me. Thank God; I didn’t pull the trigger, on the inferior Coin. Wound up with a much better example for just a little more money only a few short days later. Patience is a virtue. The coin in the OP has a terrible strike. I am certain there are better ones out there.

I don’t need something quite that old so I’m thinking I’ll just wait and pick up a Brasher Doubloon, on the cheap!😉😂

Im with @BillJones. There was a reason this one went cheap 4 years ago in auction, and looking at the overall market trends for this issue, 75% price appreciation in 4 years doesn't seem appropriate. They don't appear to be exceedingly scarce, and imo I think you can do better, even if it means spending 4-4500 for one with a better strike.

Having only four weeks ago concluded my search for a Pine Tree shilling, I would not.

We all want different things in an old coin, so YMMV from mine.

But I wanted a copy where all the lettering was clear (and all letters are essentially complete). Personally, I also wanted a large planchet. After a lot of searching, I paid more than that for a VF35 (formerly XF40 when in a PCGS holder) that met my desires; but not a great deal more (and when I spend that much on a coin, I'd rather bust the budget than have buyer's remorse).

If that coin floats your boat, for a price you find attractive, go for it. Otherwise, keep looking. These things aren't actually rare (although can be hard to find in the condition you want), and (IMO) worth being a bit patient for.

Yeah, should have deleted all but the gold part. But the Brasher’s not silver and that was the direction I was going with my wish list.

Not even with your money. I collect coins only for their beauties not the value, rarity nor history . :p

Good advise that I try to live by in this hobby. Do it right the first time. However, busting the budget lately is happening too often. Lol

I prefer a nicer coin with a hole in it for much less money. Not a rare coin, jmo.

I had that happen with a 1793 half cent. I had my guy sell the first one I bought and ate the loss and bought the better, more expensive, 2nd one.
Why keep one you won't remember fondly?

One of these types has been on my want list for awhile...I have the money but haven't found the right one, at the right price, and so don't have it. I have all the MASS copper and want one of these....

I wouldn't pay nearly double from what it sold for in 2019 for this particular coin. A better deal/coin will eventually come along.

If you are not entirely wanting it, or questioning whether or not you should get it, then you should probably wait for a better example.

You coin is beautiful, but I'd probably waste that $3500 on some common date Morgan dollar in MS67 because I can't help myself!

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!
