PCGS Rattler with a Styrofoam insert?

RLSnapperRLSnapper Posts: 580 ✭✭✭✭✭

I stumbled across this on Ebay last night. Never seen one before. Does anyone know the story behind this insert? Any other examples?

PCGS 1X This is the back label of a counterfeit slab. The most commonly mentioned identifying feature of the fake slab unfortunately often does not show well, either on these pictures or on the actual slabs. On the genuine slab, the serifs of the letters end sloping up at a 45 degree angle. On the fake the serifs are vertical. A better diagnostic and one which can be seen almost at arms length is the position of the I in Service below the D in Grading. On the genuine slab the I is almost centered between the D and I. On the counterfeit it is a little right of center of the D. A final diagonstic is that on the genuine slab all four lines of text start lined up along their left edge. On the fake the second and third lines start noticable a little to the right.

I would guess they ran out and instead of holding the coin, they used a ring from an airtite style holder.

Good info, thanks. Pictures on that thread are gone but by your comment the slab is legit. Hopefully true because that coin has passed through two or now possibly three local dealers in the Detroit area within the last couple weeks. Came into local dealer's shop with one other including the same style insert. I never got the chance to look up close or purchase as it was already spoken for. I saw both coins at a distance at one of the local shows a week later but never got an up close look as a deal was being done while I was at the table. I'll have to try and get the whole story and find out what the second coin was.

There are several examples of cents in these holders with the foam ring. They are scarce, but they are out there.

There is a style of generic holders made with interlocking foam rings at increasing mm sizes.

Dealer said other coin that came in with this Flying Eagle was either a half cent or two cent coin so it appears possible in denominations other than one cent.

Those might be the air-tite. I used some with black inner rings for a display (worked well). They have white - and I guess other colors per website.

    Even the insert looks lopsided.

Does this unusual slab style have any additional value in the rare plastic marketplace?
