1922-D Lincoln Cent variations - Share your 1922 Lincoln pics
I've somewhat become obsessed of late with the different variations and die states for the 1922-D Lincoln. I'm still working on a weak reverse.
Share a pic of your 1922 Lincoln cent.
Here are a few of mine;
Raw weak D, strong reverse:

I sold a vg third reverse "weak" one last week, looked like rusted die or something.
@CaptHenway has done a ton of research into the 1922-D cent and the no mint mark varieties, you can search some of his threads here or wait for him to publish his book on the topic later this year.

Great! Look forward to the book and thanks for the info Sean!

The last pic shows a real nice detailed obverse (the beard) that rarely is seen on 1922-D.

I know I have a couple of raw 1922 cents that I picked up in change over the last few years. I just put them aside. Will have to check them closer... Cheers, RickO
I've posted this one before as CaptHenway once paid me a nice compliment on it. I feel like this was one of the first ones off the press as it is hammered. MS66RB CAC.

Awesome strike on your 22-D. Mine isn’t too bad. The reverse is pretty strong.

Still waiting to hear back from the publisher I submitted it to.
Here’s mine, MS65+RD w/CAC. Those graded MS65RD and MS65+RD are very tough to get a CAC. All told, between PCGS and NGC combined, 154 have been graded either MS65RD or 65+RD. At this price point, you’d think many/most have been submitted to CAC, but only 12 of ANY version out of those 154 at those grades have their sticker!
@lusterlover , yours is tough too. At MS66RB, there are only 7 at that grade (5 by PCGS and 2 by NGC), and only two merit a CAC sticker. Enjoy!

Looks to me like yours came off the same die pair as Tramps, judging by the position of the "D" and how it sits in a small valley.
Pete
Agree.
At some point in the future I'll send it back to our host for re-grading. The PCGS holder I cracked it from was an MS63RB; in my opinion it was under graded.

Nice example of a late die state Die Pair #3. Could you please send me copies of the pictures?
That is an excellent beard. When you get it reholdered, you might consider getting a TrueView of it while it is out of the holder.

CaptHenway - done.
All 1922 weak D or No D coins fall into one of 7 categories:
1. Die Pair #1 Weak D (Weak Reverse)
2. Die Pair #1 No D (Weak Reverse)
3. Die Pair #2 No D (Strong Reverse) also called 1922 Plain
4. Die Pair #3 Weak D (Weak Reverse)
5. Die Pair #3 No D (Weak Reverse)
6. Die Pair #4 Weak D (Weak Reverse)
7. Die Pair #4 No D (Weak Reverse)

I have not yet been able to confirm that a 1922-D Die Pair #4 exists in a high enough condition for me to be absolutely sure that it was struck without a D, though various pieces have been certified as such over the years. I would love to see one in hand if anybody has one.
Reviewing the variants for 22 weak or no D, it would appear that this one I have may be an early Die Pair 3 with the distinct markers such as, wavy reverse, lower left of O in ONE appears to be starting to spread into the field, "TRUST" is weaker but still stronger than the other words "IN GOD WE", the second 2 in the date is weaker, the D mm is definitely weak and the L in LIBERTY is up against the rim.
The wheat stalks are more defined, thus my thoughts on an early Die Pair 3.
Thoughts?

No, this is one of the several new varieties that I will be presenting in the book.
The waviness is the result of the coin being damaged in a lucky piece holder.
TD
Thanks CaptHenway! I look forward to your book.
Good thing my coin isn't actually wavy just appears to be, left of the "ONE".
Seems to be one of the characteristics of Die Pair 3, but as you stated a new variety that you'll cover in your book.

That's a strange looking O in OF on the reverse.
Did anyone else notice it?
Pete
Here's a close up the OF area. The shadows and the strike weakness in that area appears to play tricks.

It looks like ANACS is the only one certifying Die Pair 4 variation. There's a Weak D on eBay now but the coin and the pics don't help much:

I never knew there were so many varieties for this date. I just got over a roll of 1922-D cents in a collection that I just bought. Some are the weak "D" variety I think.
Congrats on your acquisition!
Die Pairs and then there are the die states from early to late and the in-between as I'm seeing it.

I bought a 22 D a couple of years ago, only because I felt it was different, but hopefully not counterfeit. It has a weak strike on the obverse but what I felt was a fairly strong reverse, but not a Lincoln expert by any means.

That is a die pair known to me, nothing special. Dies were put in presses and used until one wore out, and then that die was replaced and you had one new die and one old die. Could be either side.
I have one obverse die paired with three different reverses, the second one already worn out when it was put in.
I need a publisher.
@CaptHenway
Thanks Cap for the info. Hope you find a publisher soon.

I have a variety of encasements.
Would you all agree that if any legitimate 1922 No D cents had ended up in encasements back in the day, they would have been popped out by now?

@CaptHenway
Anything about the '22-D with two of the three die cracks? Appears to be missing the third die crack, left wheat stalk. Maybe in this case the die hadn't developed that crack quite yet demonstrated by this '22 Lincoln?

Yes. The earliest die state after the cracks start appearing does not have the crack on the left. I would estimate roughly 15% of the cracked pieces are like this. Neither die state is rare.
@CaptHenway
This one is too beat up for me but does this 22 pic show a die crack only on the lower right wheat stalk? I haven't seen another that shows a die crack in this location or is it just PMD?

Yes, that is one of the known single die cracks. THe other one goes through the O of OF.
