I finally crossed these old SGC holders into PSA holders. I am happy with the results...
I purchased the Rose RC from REA in the Fall 2014. I had been looking for the right one for sometime...and
this card checked all my boxes. It has an interesting story...shared with me by REA. The card was consigned
by the original owner who pulled the card from a wax pack...back in the day. The consignor would look
at the bubble gum cards once...then placed the cards back in the wax wrapper not to be looked at again...
only to chew the stick of bubble gum. The preservation lends credence to the story told by REA.

Sharp cards indeed. I feel they were graded properly according to PSA standards. Thanks for sharing and congrats.
Very Nice...
Awesome cards!!!
That Rose RC should be in a PSA 9 MINT holder…centering is insane on that one! Great cards.
Jordangretzyfan...
The centering is exceptional! I measured (using a 1/100 inch scaled ruler) 50/50 side-to-side as well as top-to-bottom with respect to the combined widths of the two (2) side borders. Also...the image has NO tilt. And...the blue nameplate has no chipping of the edges. The card is a beauty...but what sealed the deal for me was the story behind the card!
However, the print blemishes in the McMullen and Rose red circles along with a touch to the upper left corner (bottom corners are mint along with the upper right corner) precludes a PSA-9 , and probably a PSA-8.5. I am happy with the grade.
That Rose is *****
Congratulations on that. That’s a beautiful 8
Nice cards!

I’m sure it was a sigh of relief that PSA didn’t determine the cards trimmed or altered…not that they appeared so! Crossovers can be a risky proposition.
definitely an 8.5. if its got 8 qualities than it should be an 8.5. when a card is this centered, it should be a half grade, which in my mind signifies 9.5 or 10 centering for that particular grade. 7.5 or 8.5, and in this case 8.5.
Congrats on the crosses. I know you are not an SGC guy and like all your slabs to be PSA.
Rose is under graded. Should be an 8.5 for sure.
As a slabnostic person generally pay a little more for an SGC 92/8.5 than a PSA 8. Have 57 of them in my collection including your old ‘63 Berra.
Nice! Were they removed from the slabs before sending in? I assume not since you strictly stated crossover.

Great cards! You have major balls to resubmit those. Glad you are happy.
NGS428...
I submitted in SGC holders...
I purchased the 1956 Mantle in a Mile High Card Auction in the Fall 2009. I was able to see the card in person that Summer at the National Convention in Cleveland before committing . Brian Drent had four (4) 1956 Mantle cards in the auction: a PSA-9 (0xxxxxxx), SGC-9, SGC-8.5 and a PSA-8 (1xxxxxxx). The SGC-8.5 appealed to me the most out of the four (4) cards. So...I bid aggressively and won with a bid of $3900 including the buyer's premium.
It seems there are plenty of other cards from the set that have graded 8.5s and even 9 with print dots or blemishes so it really appears suspect that population manipulation was in play on the Rose. FWIW, I believe the SGC 8.5 holder would have faired better over the long term.
I thought that the Rose RC had a decent chance at a PSA-8.5...but not meant to be.
They seem stingy on the half grades still. If any card deserves the 8.5, it’s that rose!

Those are beautiful cards. I believe the PSA grades are spot on. The Rose has print and too much corner wear for an 8.5 grade. I think this says something when collectors/investors would rather have a PSA 8 then an 8.5 in another holder. I feel the same way. I just am not the biggest fan of SGC. Great cards. You did a wise move.
Monte, great cards again. That rose is absolutely stellar. While its a different card from the set, a few years ago, I had this Stargell rookie reviewed and it bumped a half grade to 8.5. Hard to see the difference between the two. Shows how arbitrary the half grades can be and grading in general sometimes.
the rose is slightly better centered than the stargell. both looks great.
Congrats on the results!
It makes the half grade meaningless.
I know the intent was, that buyers could buy slabbed cards sight unseen, but we've all seen and probably own cards where the grader missed the grade by a full point.
There are going to be strong 8s and weak 8s, and 7s and 9s in 8 slabs, for that matter.
What's next, a strong 8.5 should be labeled a 8.75?
It has often been said, to buy old SGC graded cards since they were (reportedly) more strict and crossovers would likely see a grade bump. Obviously not the case here. I wonder had they been cracked out, the OP would have received the grades he got.
I did not want to risk damage to the cards cracking them out considering the value of these two cards. You do raise an interesting question…are graders at PSA influenced by a grade given by another grading company?
I did own an old sgc-84 1958 Ernie Banks…cracked it out …and came back a PSA-8.
MantleFan23…
Beautiful 1963 Stargell RC…well deserving of the bump to an 8.5.
Congrats. Did you put MIN GRADE 8 for the sub ??
Yes...Min Grade an 8
Congrats on the crossovers. Both had a shot at 8.5 IMO. I’ve always admired that Rose RC ever since you posted it shortly after the REA auction. Beauty card!
Yes, they are.

Sadly and disappointingly, I think you're right!
Do you think the graders are influenced also by the who the player on the card is?
For sure
Bottoms up…
Do they give a reason now why they dont pass or just send them back? I remember at one time they would put a sticky pad and say. "PD" or point to a corner. Havent tried in a while. I thought it was helpful and at todays charges/prices I hope they do.
Not anymore from what I know.
No reason given for not crossing to your designated minimum grade
The Rose rookie has elite centering - looks as good as any I have seen in any grade. Such a beautiful card.
Did anyone notice that for his minor league stats Pete Rose had 52 triples in in 354 games?
Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.
Solid return congrats

Must be where the Charlie Hustle came from.
Sorry Kendall, was for Cakes
"Did anyone notice that for his minor league stats Pete Rose had 52 triples in in 354 games?"
Just like little league, just keep running and force them to make a play. So many single end up as triples when the ball starts getting chucked around in a panic because something unexpected is happening.
The runs scored is abnormally high as well.
