Signed, sealed, but not delivered - COINS FOUND!

UPS & ANACS have opened an investigation on a package of 33 coins that were signed for (not by me) and delivered July 3rd (not received). No family members signed for the box, none of my neighbors signed, local pawn shops have been notified. In the meantime, here are the ANACS cert #'s to look out for,...thank you.

This is awful news. I had this happen a couple of years ago. UPS was no help at all. Best of luck in finding these coins.

I had this happen a couple of years ago. I bought a gold coin from an eBay coin dealer for $650 and I followed the tracking. As soon it said delivered at mailbox, I went to get it and it wasn't there. Since it was less than $750, eBay didn't require signature confirmation. It was either stolen or misdelivered. The USPS was using a lot of contractors who weren't actual postal employees so I'm assuming one of them probably stole it.

To be fair, eBay may not mandate signature confirmation for less expensive items but the seller can. I'd also point out that even above $750, the seller can choose to not require it. It voids their selle3 guarantee through ebay, but there is never an actual ebay mandate requiring signature confirmation.

[Nor should there be, in my personal opinion. ]

Ouch!!! Is there any way to request the TPG to split up an order into two or three separate shipments to avoid/reduce risk of theft of one large shipment?

  • 291fifth291fifth Posts: 24,437 ✭✭✭✭✭

Highly unusual items that will attract attention when the thief attempts to sell them. Make sure all of the dealers, pawn brokers, metal buyers in your area are aware of the theft and know what to look for. Letting area banks know would be a good idea as well. The thief may just crack them out and attempt to cash them in at a bank, thinking they are just spending money.

Postal workers don't get signature confirmation from the customer anymore. They scribble on their electronic device and drop the package off. Just a month ago I was home and sitting outside waiting for the mailman. He never came. I checked the package status and it said it was left with individual aka ME. It was not. I went around to all the neighbors and found my package along with all my regular mail two doors down.

I suggest checking around your neighborhood for your package. Call the postmaster too.

    Yeah, here's what mine says.
    Latest Update
Your item was delivered to an individual at the address at 12:14 pm on July 6, 2023 in (I've omitted my address). The item was signed for by (my name) (me).
But I didn't sign for it.

What's up with that? If I pay for Signature Confirmation at the PO, I think I'd be expecting a sig from the buyer/guy I sent it to and not from, I'm guessing, the mailman. And there's no documentation on the package of anything that was signed. Looks like I need to get on the horn with my PO.
And the GS dog I have, she didn't even bark this time.....wt heck!

Not UPS, but twice I’ve had coin packages for me delivered by the postal service to the wrong house in my neighborhood. Since I set up tracking notification, I received an email within minutes of it being “delivered”. I then go right out to my mailbox*. Seeing it’s not there, I immediately called the local post office, explained what happened, and provided the tracking number. Apparently they now use a camera of some sort, and they can “see” what address the package was actually delivered to. They contacted the carrier, who retrieved the package, and then brought it to me (both times).

*In my case I bought a very small $60 battery operated device that attaches to the inside of my mailbox lid. When that lid is lowered to place mail in the box, or mail is taken from the box, there’s a gravity driven mercury type switch that is activated. Wirelessly, it then sounds four loud beeps on the companion device inside my house. As such, I immediately know when my mail is delivered each day, so I can immediately retrieve it. Additionally, if someone else goes to either take something out, or put something in, I can then immediately look and/or go outside to see what’s going on.

    Here’s a hotlink to the device I bought: https://www.amazon.com/Mail-Chime-Mailbox-Notification-System/dp/B00YWDE6SI/ref=sr_1_5?crid=62KDVJ2IK7MF&keywords=wireless+mailbox+alert+system&qid=1688701853&sprefix=Wireless+mailbox,aps,108&sr=8-5

Yes, since Covid, signatures are no longer important evidently. I think it's time to put the signature back into play. But it is a lot easier now for deliveries, just scribble on the delivery line and drop it somewhere near the destination.

When I applied to be a ups driver a couple years ago, I remember my driving test. I was obeying all state traffic laws, including speed limits. The ups supervisor riding with me was telling me the whole time to speed up, hurry, you have lots of packages to deliver. I got the impression all they cared about was the quantity of packages delivered, not how they were delivered. I passed all their test easily but think I was driving to slow for them. Didn't get the job. Lol

I believe I heard on the news that UPS is getting ready to go on strike. I'm not sure what effect that may have on packages that are waiting in the UPS warehouse and if they will be delivered any time soon.

I am going thru a similar situation.
Coin arrived at my local Post Office and was “out for delivery” on July 3rd.
The coin was never delivered and the tracking code shows that it still awaiting delivery confirmation.
I went to the PO and they could not find it and said the mail person has it. I spoke to the mail carrier and she has not seen it or know its whereabouts.
I have contacted the seller but have not received a reply.
I do have 2 things going for me.
One is eBay can step in after a 3 day no reply and the other is, I paid thru PayPal.
It is a small item coin but it would have been a nice coin to add to my lowball set.
If any thing happens, I will update you.

    A quick update.
eBay contacted the seller who contacted me. The coin still has not been delivered.
The seller has started an investigation with the post office to find out the coin’s where a-bouts.
I will file with eBay on Monday for a full refund.
I honestly feel sorry for the seller who will lose out on the sale price and the coin itself.

Sorry to say this, but you’re going to lose the ebay support case. They won’t cover you in this instance because the item “made it to the destination post office”. I’ve had handfuls of times where the item never gets delivered because of a plethora of reasons, and ebay will side with the seller in this case. You’re going to have to deal with PayPal to get the refund.

Your investigation has been closed with a proof of delivery.

This is what I saw this morning on the UPS site regarding my 'lost' package. I call customer service and say that I do not have package and it sounds like the investigation is over because it was signed for. I reiterated that I did not sign for it and I can prove that I was not home during the time of delivery. Rep says that the package was found. What!? "Yes, I will connect you to the investigation department. Okay, great, but....

I get connected and the rep asks for the pertinent information and asks what my "concerns are"(?) "My concerns?" I said, "My concerns are that a 5.8 lb box of coins was delivered and signed for other than me and that the previous rep, the one that transferred me to you, said the package was found. Rep, "Can I put you on hold". Elevator music. Rep come back on line and says the they will reopen the investigation, no package was found.

The incompetence of most of the delivery services is unbelievable in my area I sweat it out every time I make an online purchase. Numerous times I have found it on a neighbors porch or not found it at all wish you all the best in a speedy recovery

    Great news!

This event reminds me of a package delivery problem I experienced in the early 1990s. UPS delivered a package for me to the house immediately across the street, a distance of no more than 100 feet. The house was rented by a medical resident doctor at the time. I didn't know him. After several attempts to find out just where my package had been delivered I finally learned that it had gone to the house across the street. I walked over to the house and rang the bell. The medical resident doctor answered the door. I asked if he had my package (this was now several weeks after it had been delivered). He said nothing, reached down, picked up the package, handed it to me and closed the door.

    All glory is fleeting.

ANACS called me early this morning - a productive call. Even though I had a box of coins sent to my current address last year, somehow my box of 33 was sent to my previous address. I was assured that my previous address was wiped clean. On the UPS side, the proof of delivery only shows my city and state; my move was just one mile away and my city, state (and zip code) didn't change. I didn't know that was the point of confusion until yesterday when a local island UPS rep asked me for my street address again and noticed a different street name. ANACS also discovered via their investigation that the driver 'cut corners', it was signed for and left on the lanai for days(?) until the home owners returned back on-island.

FOUND, all 33 ANACS encapsulated coins!

After this morning's whipsaw of emotions, I didn't think this evening would come with my coins in hand.

Coins were sent to a previous address that I had not lived at in years. I learned of this five hours after the day's earlier event. I drove to the old house, just a mile away to see if anyone was home. Lucky enough, the lady of the house was painting the front door. I asked if she got a package for me. She said yes and was surprised to see me because she thought I had moved back to the Mainland. She said they were off island and had not had time to return the package to UPS.

Who signed for the delivery? How long were the coins on the lanai? I didn't care anymore, took the coins and drove home. But I will be having a phone-con with ANACS in the morning.
