Thoughts on this 1802 Bust Dollar

BoloBolo Posts: 125 ✭✭✭✭

Next on my "to-be-graded" list are my Bust type coins, and I thought I'd ask as I am very much NOT a Bust expert - this coin was sold to me as an EF40 20 or so years ago, but I suspect it is more of a VF30ish. Do you agree? Do you see anything about this one that would get it the dreaded "details" grade?

VF30 seems about right, maybe a little bit of wiggle room though.

Type collector, mainly into Seated. -formerly Ownerofawheatiehorde. Good BST transactions with: mirabela, OKCC, MICHAELDIXON, Gerard

Hard to tell from these photos. But from what I can see, it should straight grade. I’ve seen a hell of a lot worse in straight graded plastic.

    VF30 appears slightly optimistic.
I'd be looking for at 20 or 25.
    Neat coin.

    Agreed, probably 20-25

The coin looks like it could be VF30... At that level, it really needs in hand evaluation or better pictures. Cheers, RickO

Here's my 1802 for comparison if that helps:

It looks lightly cleaned to me, Just a little too shiny. Kind of hard to judge from the photos. There is probably a good reason it's on a 2X2. I would pass and wait for a coin that's original and already holdered.

It's a solid 25, should straight grade. A few minor rim dings and probably an old cleaning, but both PCGS and NGC are lenient with these coins.

Thanks everyone. I thought this was in VF territory and its nice to see the confirmations so I can put the right amount of insurance on it when I send it in.

I'm the one that put it in the 2x2  Most of my type set was acquired before slabbed coins totally took over the market.

Bought this recently. 1802/1 narrow date, I believe. A couple rim dings from a straight grade.
But who doesn't like a bust dollar ?

Yours looks to be problem free. Wish I could say the same.

I like it; worth getting graded.

Lightly cleaned Bust coinage, if there are no other problems, from what I have seen, usually gets slabbed. The reverse of your coin appears to be a solid XF, which would be reduced by the obverse. Go to either photograde of coin fact and compare your coins to their graded coins.
