which one do you prefer? 1894 1c

TPRCTPRC Posts: 3,803 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have 2 1894 Indian cents and I likely will keep one of them. Both pieces are in PC 64RB, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. I don't know how to do a poll, so I'll just ask to pick your favorite. I have a pretty solid previously formed opinion, and but I am willing to be swayed. Pick 1 or 2

I am not a fan of either due to the fingerprints, but push come to shove it has to be 1

1, no question for me. I think the spots on the reverse would bother me. Nice coins, regardless.

I agreed with everyone above me ...

Tough decision as they both have things that seem to best the other ... but I like the more subdued RB and less spotting, and less obvious fingerprints on 1

Agreed. Spots in 2... The more consistent coloring of 1 make it more attractive imo.

I know this wasn't the question but, If they were mine I would sell them both and get a problem free coin to replace it.
Note, the 1894 was one of the last coins I bought for my set, hard to come by nice

Fingerprints on coins spoil them IMO.... Even when subdued by tarnish... So, picking one, likely number 1... However, if my coins, I would sell them both and buy a problem free coin. Cheers, RickO

Like others, I would pick #1 because of the spots on the reverse of #2 but would still seek out another example without fingerprints.

Thanks for the comments. I am impressed because I thought the color would sway some. Number 1 is indeed a superior coin and I paid 25% more for it. I don't really mind fingerprints, but I don't like the other spots on number 2. Both were purchased raw the first as a 4 and the second as a 3. Number 1 is really nice and I thought it might 5, but I am considering selling both and getting a superior one.

Both coins have characteristics I like, and both also have detractions... I like the overall appearance of the #1 coin, but the #2 coin looks to be a better strike. That said, fingerprints are a major distraction for me and the #2 coin has fingerprints in the obverse field as well as some significant carbon spots on the reverse. Because of that, I'd pick the #1 coin but I like your approach in trying to sell both and get a coin you really like.... please post when you do!!

I agree with @ricko, sell both and acquire a better one. Good luck. Peace Roy

I prefer the color of #2 but am bothered by the spot on the reverse. For that reason; I choose #1.

Of the two I like coin 1. I am bothered by spots of the size and position as the one on the reverse of 2. Both are well struck enough for my tastes.

To my eye, I see slightly more wear on the obv of #1. The spotting on #2 is a detraction for me. I would be hard pressed to choose, and would probably keep both.

I think from a re-sale aspect, #2 will be easier to sell as it is brighter and will appeal more to the lay-person. That is always a factor I consider in my collection, the ability to recoup funds if possible.

With that in mind, if pressed I would choose #2.

as some mentioned the spots on #2, has me choosing #1 easily.

I prefer 2 to 1 due to the difference in your cost.

1, top due to reasons others have said about #2. Also agree with others and yourself to sell both and buy a problem free '94 even if it takes some waiting. Fun is in the search. Enjoy!

Sell them both and buy one without prints. Or, number one if you must keep just one.

I would pass on both coins.
