I recently purchased this almost flawless 1878-S Morgan. She has some unique toning that I'm really liking. Can the toner experts please chime in whether this is natural or artificial toning, please? I will be submitting soon. Thank you all!

I tried to post a video, but it says file is too large.

The toning looks ok to me. Can you show a reverse pic and a better obverse pic? I'm not seeing flawless from here.

I'm actually on the road right now. The reverse is blast white. I have a nice video saved, but it won't let me post it. Says file is too big. Any advice as to how to post it?

Looks ok to me but I'm not a toning expert either.

Shorten the video. It will probably change it to a low grade video anyway that won't be helpful. Good clear pics work just as good.

Is this a fingerprint? Nice strike and I’m the last person to ask about AT vs NT. It’s all a matter of intent. Thanks 🙏

Ouch. Didn’t notice that ding in the U.

Yes, it does have a print or two in the toning.

Almost flawless? The obverse has that indent in the U of UNUM, at least three prominent fingerprints in different areas of the coin, a couple dings on the nose and what appears to be pretty harsh marks on Ms. Liberty's neckline. Aside from that, the image is too tough for me to interpret the color.

To me, the coin looks artificially toned and far removed from almost flawless.

Agree better pics needed. In photo, toning doesn't appear to be appealing and colors look off but could be wrong.

I'd have to disabuse you of the notion your Morgan is flawless.
Once you have accepted that reality, the toning could be discussed.

I would like to see the reverse.

I am on the fence as to whether is is artificial or natural, but I don’t think that it is particularly attractive. The coin is also far from flawless. I don’t think that having it graded is worth the cost.

Too many marks to be flawless. I don't think there is such a thing as a flawless Morgan dollar other than the recent 2021 Centennial Morgans. It doesn't matter to the professional graders if it's AT or NT as long as they consider it to be MA or Market Acceptable. This one is a close call and I can see it going either way.

Coin looks ok. It should straightgrade at either a 62 or 63

The coin has several flaws - dings, fingerprints.... The tarnish appears ugly in your picture. I believe you will be wasting money to submit it for grading/slabbing. Cheers, RickO

I’ll be danged. I’ve been wondering about how they make the call , as I’m really hung up on “intent “. Absolutely……
Market acceptable. That’s hitting the ole nail on the head. I’m having a moment of clarity. Thanks buddy

Here is a quick video on YouTube. What looks like a little scratch on the cheek in the beginning is toning. No scratches.

Based on the video, I see AT. The look of the coin is way off.

Ya I'm retracting also. Don't like the toning on the obv and it also looks like I got a glimpse of some harse cleaning on the reverse.

The reverse has some serious die polishing going on. I can't capture it with my phone's camera, but that is some. It is only on the reverse, but it is die polishing.

My suggestion is return this coin and get a refund if you can, this is a poster child for what not to buy.

Possible, but it is not uncommon to see circulation marks like this in the fields of Morgan dollars.

It sort of look like the coin was lacquered in the video 🤔

It does have that look on the obverse.

I have seen similar that have been in Tidy House promotional holders, although the 78-S is not a typical coin found there.

I just picked up this coin from the PCGS show. I shelled out for the Show grading this morning. I'll post the results in a new thread.
