What is going on with this 1881 Carson City Morgan? Cleaned or Counterfeit?

Can't tell if the surface is damage from being harshly cleaned or if its actually pitted due to being counterfeit. More experienced eyes, what do you think?

From what I have seen from other sources, the 1881-CC dollar might be leading the numismatic leagues for the most counterfeited Morgan dollar. One crook was proudly displayed a whole slab box full of them in counterfeit certification holders.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. ....but the coin isn't gone. It will reappear in a different venue such as the local flea market.
