Family pictures...

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,605 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know that some have extensive collections that couldn't be realistically captured in a single image whereas others are more directed. Some have managed to whittle down to a "Box of 20"... just for grins as I was doing a little cleaning and reorganizing, I snapped this family photo today...

The biggest change in my collecting over the years has been the de-emphasis of albums (I'm down to just two) and a move towards certified coins.

Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;

Successful BST transactions with: SilverEagles92; Ahrensdad; Smitty; GregHansen; Lablade; Mercury10c; copperflopper; whatsup; KISHU1; scrapman1077, crispy, canadanz, smallchange, robkool, Mission16, ranshdow, ibzman350, Fallguy, Collectorcoins, SurfinxHI, jwitten, Walkerguy21D, dsessom.

Nice coin family, they seem to get along with each other quite well.

Your coin family looks very well organized. Very nice. I especially like your type set album where it looks like you cracked out a bunch of them from slabs. I’m not that brave. I left my type set coins slabbed and have just lower grade coins in my albums.

My collection needs at least 2 photos

    Here’s my slabbed coins 🌝

    And here’s my albums 🌚

Wow! Now THAT'S quite the extended family!

I got more organized... and directed... when I sold off the bulk of my collection around 2012. I had maybe six partial albums from Indian Head Cents to Mercury Dimes to Washington Quarters... lots of 90% and waning interest in those series. I was buying a lot of bulk silver and would fill albums with Dates/MM. I felt it was the best way to organize it all.

I've now consolidated into Large Cents (upper left 2x2 box and 4 certified coins); a Box of 20 (I'm halfway there); and two albums: my 7070 Type Set, and Lincoln Cents (1940 to 1968+). The Lincoln Cent album was the very first album I ever started so it's more of a sentimental thing... as is the other 2x2 Box in the upper right... remnants of the original "accumulation"...

Nice. I’m planning on selling off a bunch of mine too and focusing on a smaller more manageable type set of slabbed coins in a few years when I retire. In the meantime I already sold off most of my bullion and used the money to get some of my slabbed 19th century type set coins. But still a long way to go. I’ll probably still keep my albums too though. I still have my childhood Lincoln cents too, they are now in 2 Official US Mint albums. I transferred them from my old beat up Whitman folders to those albums about 18 or so years ago.

My family members are all temporarily adopted, here in foster care. Fortunately or unfortunately, they many be in your families one day. Please take care of them when they arrive. 😉

My family members are all here to stay.
When the head of household moves to the great collection in the sky, they will still become a part of my future family generations.

Love you sharing this. I’m a relatively older collector (~mid 50s) but I never did adopt using albums… I basically collect only certified graded coins - or if they are raw (like most of my ASEs) then I put them in flips and keep them in PCGS or NGC boxes - those boxes hold 2x2 flips with coins - even if encapsulated, and that lets me view them easier. I love looking at these coins without having to open OGP boxes or having them in an album where they can be exposed to more handling and oxidation, etc - Hate the OGP boxes (although I save them) for storage because then I never look at them. I love having my coins graded - other wise you have zero idea of the value.
One example, had a fellow collector recently passed (in 2020) and he had a 1935S peace dollar in an album - beautiful coin! His family later decided to sell it / buyer asked on condition of grade (seller had figured MS64 or 65 / which I concurred at the time, and that was what he told his wife and she believed) / well that’s a 1000 plus dollar coin….!!! So exciting, right? There were many examples like this…
Had it in his “album” for many years - and it looked well preserved.

Well / buyer insisted it be graded in this case and it came back AU details cleaned and really only worth ~100 bucks …. 10x reduction in value unbeknownst to the collector!!

Don’t let that happen - I really think coins that are highly valued should be graded and stored as such. It’s really hard to tell the value of the coins otherwise. And if you sell them, you’ll likely leave a lot of money on the table. Albums are cool for some collections (circulated, etc) but for u circulated coins that are 50 plus years old / get them graded…!!!

Just my two cents - love this forum and appreciate all the expertise here. I’m wrong a lot and that’s okay - I like it when you correct me and I gain the knowledge and wisdom when you do. Happy Friday!! (Soon)

My coin family is scattered all over the house... Packing boxes, cabinets, coin cabinets, safe, by the computer, in the living room... and probably a few more places. Could never put it all in one picture. That is OK though, sometimes I get a nice surprise when I come across a coin, or coins, I forgot I even had. Fun times... Cheers, RickO

By the time I got the last few pieces of my 7070 I sort of bristled at cracking them out but these are not uncirculated coins. The great majority are XF-AU (some VF's) and I think most would at least re-holder at the same grade assuming "market acceptability" doesn't move with the shifting sands. It's true that I'll incur an additional cost to get them re-holdered if/when I go to sell, but I'll likely only do this for maybe 20 or so coins in the set. At that point, I'll probably fold the Copper into my existing EAC Collection (mostly raw) and keep some of the earlier Silver Type in my Box of 20. FWIW... the very last piece I bought to complete the set is the PCGS XF45 Seated Liberty Dollar w/ TV which has the "proxy coin" in the album...

I do. I store the albums in my safe.
They make it easier for me to view, add new and upgraded coins.
