It's that thing when you can't tell if she's gorgeous or hideous.

So you tell me. Gorgeous or hideous?

Not attractive that is for sure. Believe a quick dip can turn that gal around. Maybe Redfield peach juice.

I like it. PCI holders are notorious for toning like this.

  • braddickbraddick Posts: 24,183 ✭✭✭✭✭

It is the unknown if it is lustrous or not.
With blazing, booming luster, that golden tone would be attractive.
If it is dull and lifeless that "golden" toning takes on a more menacing look.

This is one of the few exceptions where I would say, I would want to dip.

Under that toning, there’s got to be a really pretty coin. I can tell it’s well struck and got great luster.

Would be more acceptable if the streaky toning wasn't on her face. If I didn't pass completely, I believe it would be submitted for conservation.

I don't know about "notorious" per se but I do agree that I have seen several wild toners in their holders.
I like the color of this piece but the weird patterns make me wonder how this could happen naturally.

This coin is a candidate for being purchased on line at 2:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning by a collector (who has had too much to eat and drink after leaving work on Friday afternoon) who is itching to bring home a new coin after trying and failing to do so for the past 7-8 hours.

Sort of like going to a bar on Friday night and staying until closing time at 2:00 a.m. The closer to closing time one gets, the better looking persons still at the bar look.

For the record, I like the coin too. But that’s a different matter from thinking it’s gorgeous.

Regarding speculation about the coin being from the Redfield hoard - my recollection is that many or most Redfield coins exhibit toning that’s less translucent and more mottled than seen on this one.

Perhaps "notorious" is too strong, yet close enough.

I can appreciate it. I'd take that over a plain white one. It's unique and a pretty color despite the splotchiness. We all know that date comes flashy and I haven't even looked at the video posted yet.

To me the toning reminds me of something varnished and its peeling off. If it were a smooth transition i could like it, this one tho, my ocd would kick in everytime i looked at it and i would want to dip it.

Not really my "cup of tea". I dont mind understated toning and there appears and be some luster under the color but the pukey yellow isn't what I typically associate with "color" on a Morgan Dollar.

Hopefully, she'll find a good home before closing time...

What’s the “hmmm” for? Many coins tone in holders, without any intentional assistance.

    Don't recall saying they can't...

What I am saying is that at a minimum, the PCI holders from this period weren't sealed very well, allowing air or perhaps other gases in.

They may not be completely air tight...
I think it's also widely believed that the plastic is full of chemicals that accelerate the tarnish, not unlike the small Anacs holders of that era.
