You guys have given invaluable help in the past and I'm hoping someone can enlighten me to this strange half dollar.
As you can see it has a bronze finish which baffles me.

Hint - did you look up the metal composition of 1982 half dollars?

Forgive me are you saying it's without the nickel cladding?
It's environmental damage.
No, but they are copper nickel alloys.
You've got a "rusty" half dollar. It doesn't look oxidized to you?
Ok thanks it just looked to uniform to be plain old rust but you live n learn
Metal detector find?
Proof half dollar turned...in a bad way. Fire damage?

Environmental damage...from a very unfriendly environment. Cheers, RickO
Interesting mottling. Looks dug

Do you think it's worth cleaning?
No.

There's no harm in playing with it. But it won't "clean" in any way that will leave it attractive.
It's worth fifty-cents either way. However, damage like your coin has will not just disappear, there is underlying metal damage that will show up unless you polish the crud out of the coin.

Environmental damage, just spend it.
It looks like something is growing on it.

Agree. The obverse in particular actually looks kind of cool. Looks like something you'd see under a microscope. Weird
