Anybody with any good vintage poppage from the FEB special??
Mine just popped today, and I got absolutely murdered.
Cards I pre-graded at least a 7, got 4's.
I got (6) 4's, (10) 5's.
Are you kidding me?
Creased cards get 4's, and they're saying MINE is a 4?
Even my cherry picked 89 Hoops Jordan got a 5.
Geez that sucks. Sounds about typical results right now. Hearing from a lot of different submitters getting similar results - all a grade or two lower than expected for no apparent reason, I know many are backing off from submitting right now. Just isn't worth it to get very inconsistent grading standards applied to each order.
Their grading of 1980+ has been good so far. That's not my issue.
Of the (14) 1980+ cards I subbed (not including the Jordan 5), 10 were exactly what I expected, 2 were under 1 point, and 1 was over 1 point, and 1 got the 1/2 grade over. And as I've said, the (30) 1990+ June special cards I subbed, maybe 5 were off by 1 point, and 1 off by 2, so my pre-grading was pretty good and mostly inline with PSA.
It's the pre-1970 stuff that got hammered. Can I suddenly be that off with pre-1970 pre-grading?
I guess when graders look at modern refractors all day, a black and white deckle edge looks like garbage.
Either PSA doesn't have real vintage guys, or they've dramatically changed their practice for pre-1970, despite the written standards. You can easily see it when comparing with similar cards graded years ago.
And it seems like they're not grading on each cards own merit, but instead grading the first in a bundle then grading the rest by comparing to the card previously graded. If the first one is not graded properly as a baseline, the rest will all be off too.
Matches my experience exactly. Sent in 60 cards on this special. 29 from pre 1980. 17 of them came back worse than I expected, 9 came back as I expected, and 3 better. The other 31 were from 1980 and later. 11 of those came back better than I expected, 9 came back what I expected, and 11 worse. And my expectations were "conservative".
I still suck at grading either way, but 41% accuracy pre 1980 and 65% accuracy post 1980 is telling, especially when you consider that the post 1980 cards were in PSA 7 - PSA 9 condition and the pre 1980 were mostly PSA 3 - PSA 5. Should be much easier to tell a PSA 3 from a PSA 4 than a PSA 8 from a PSA 9.
I did want to thank you for this comment: " Their grading of 1980+ has been good so far. That's not my issue."
I was going to save myself the agony of sending in a bunch of 1980s basketball on the current special based on this thread, but that comment is going to make me submit AGAAAAIN :-).
Don't pin that on me. LOL. I already subbed 50 cards for the 80s special before this Feb pop. We'll see if my positive comment holds up in couple months.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. Clearly PSA grading standards have changed and they didn't notify us about it. I cracked a 5 and it came back a 2???? I cracked a 7 that looks so under graded. Came back a 5.
Wow. I can't even imagine. Grading is not really that hard, especially with specific guidelines and standards. No excuse for 3 point differences. Why isn't the second set of eyes in QA1 catching these?
My FEB Vintage Special popped. I've been grading vintage cards for 29 years and have generally thought their grading was good. My pre grades and results were always reasonably close. This sub was not good. There were some cards that were off by 4 whole grades from my estimates. And on average many were 1-2 full grades off. I'm talking NM-MT cards getting a 6 and NM cards getting a 5. All of the cards I expected like a 3 or 4 were basically spot on. It's like 50 different graders each graded 1 card. One good thing is that I have been preparing myself for this disaster. All of the chatter amongst vintage folks is exactly this. Grading way too tough and incredibly inconsistent. If a vintage card is not 55-45 centered, you can forget about an 8 from what I'm seeing and experiencing. Not sure exactly where I go from here with all of this. Sorry, I'm not delivering better news.

Sorry to hear Mickey. This sucks. Where do we go with all this? For me, I've stopped buying. The thrill of finding that exceptional raw vintage card that is low pop or just may be the highest graded, is basically gone. I'm sitting on a few cards that could be some of the low pop higher grades, that I can't get myself to sub right now.

He's not wrong. So many 5-7s in the last few I've gotten back. At one point I'd see 8s even with an imperfect corner if the centering was good. That's completely out the door and window these days. I don't understand their grading system currently. The path from a 10 to 7 is quick, but to go from a 7-3 allows for a lot more damage.
At first I stopped buying unopened, and now I've stopped buying singles (raw & graded) because the grading is so inconsistent. In the past I'd be able to crack/resub and almost all would be the same grade at PSA or one higher. For the past year I'm lucky if those cracked come back the same grade, and will be at least 1 point lower. I have a bunch of 1980-earlier to grade, and that's it for me.
From here, turn around time for grading orders seems very random these days. Two orders sub'd during June under the same account number, both with items from 1990's-present. One received 6/30, logged 7/5, and has been in Q1 for a relative while now. The next order was received 7/3 and it is not even logged yet...

That is weird. After reading your post I just checked 3 sent on the July special that arrived July 12 and entered July 28. All 3 are already in Research & ID.

PSA has been very good about logging in subs lately. Did you find out if there is an issue?

No issues identified yet. Thinking it is possibly related to personnel being assigned to the national and otherwise off-duty from their usual work?

I respectfully disagree. A submission received on 7/3 should have been logged in within a few days. I personally have seen no recent exceptions to that. Even last week I had submissions progressing. Did you call and reach someone with a clue to help you?

I have a sub that shows arrived 7/19 on my submission page that still hasn't been entered yet. I'm assuming it's due to the National.

Nah, they didn't take the peeps that open boxes to the National as there are no packages, just hand submitted cards. Figure they took a few research and ID peeps maybe. Should be about 2 weeks from arrival till they open the package and put you at Research & ID stage. You'll probably get an email by sunday.
June special. Received 6/29/2023. Just popped today. Got hammered on grades and I am not pleased. This is my first time grading the early-mid 90s Finest refractors... are they notoriously tough on these? I looked at these things under a loupe, removed the coating if it was scratched, etc. I am not trying to receive 8s on modern cards!!!

All my submissions are taking at least 25 days longer than advertised. Plus, PSA's grading system is broken or at least ridiculously flawed for older cards now. I personally am done with PSA and moving to SGC. You get your cards back in 2 weeks and their grades are much higher than PSA.
Thinking about subbing a few 60s singles now under the new special.

Yeah unfortunately its a bad time to submit any 1990s refractors. I deal in a lot of 1990s refractors and PSA is just not giving out 10s on them right now. No matter how flawless they are, they get 8s or 9s.
Before the pandemic, I would easily get 50% or more PSA 10s on a submission of them. Right now, I am lucky to get 1 out of 20, My grading standards haven't changed and I am very well-versed in grading them.
Many dealers and other experienced submitters are seeing the same results. I have stopped submitting a lot of stuff for now. It just is not worth it to get grades that don't match up with the card's actual condition.

Agreed with this; I have an order that arrived 3/2, logged 3/7, that just went from Assembly to Q1 last week. Another order arrived 3/6 and logged 3/13 is still on R&D. The order that logged 3/13 was submitted for dual service card & auto so I expected it to take l little longer, but this is more time than I would have guessed.

This is discouraging to the say the least. I wasn't expecting 10s across the board, but I definitely thought some were worthy of 10s, most would be 9s, with a few 8s.

Is this surface damage or residue from removing the coating?

Do you have experience with removing the coating?
I have a PSA7 that must have been downgraded because of the coating and I was thinking of removing it.
Do you try to clean after removal? It seems that would cause micro scratches.
Any other tips/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Man, the only thing I’ve gotten any 10s on since they reopened is Ultra Modern. Not one in vintage.
I let my membership lapse. I've had more 8s and 9s in the past year than I've received in my previous 10 years of grading. I recently had an order pop of Star Wars Finest refractors. All 14 came back 9s. A couple had been previously graded an 8 and 7, both ended up 9s. A couple I had just pulled from packs and went over meticulously with a loupe and both were 9s. There is no consistency. I'll let others gamble
Well I guess the squeaky wheel will get the grease. After calling for 7 days in a row it went from 5 to 7 today. Hopefully the grades will be better than the latest ones I’ve received.
I sent a couple submissions in on the 80s special. They arrived August 1 and nothing has been entered in their system yet. I assume due to the National, because it's taking longer than any thing I've ever submitted before.

All my submissions are taking at least 25 days longer than advertised. Plus, PSA's grading system is broken or at least ridiculously flawed for older cards now. I personally am done with PSA and moving to SGC. You get your cards back in 2 weeks and their grades are much higher than PSA.
Day 112, got the runaround from PSA Customer Service. They can’t do anything right. It’s worse now because they can’t grade correctly either
Quick question:
If you send in modern and when it comes back it’s vintage, which special does it qualify for?
🤔
Curious about the rare, mysterious and beautiful 1951 Wheaties Premium Photos?

Lol!!! That’s funny
Thinking about subbing a few 60s singles now under the new special.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Follow-up: Finally logged on 8/2
Agreed with this; I have an order that arrived 3/2, logged 3/7, that just went from Assembly to Q1 last week.
I'm not well versed in refractors or removing the coating, but what happened to get a 3?
Is this surface damage or residue from removing the coating?
Do you have experience with removing the coating?
I have a PSA7 that must have been downgraded because of the coating and I was thinking of removing it.
Do you try to clean after removal? It seems that would cause micro scratches.
Any other tips/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I assume I missed a crease or something substantial. Will need to inspect it when I get them back.
Man, the only thing I’ve gotten any 10s on since they reopened is Ultra Modern. Not one in vintage.
The only thing for me was a 1982 Granny Goose Henderson and I submitted Kellogg’s right out of the sealed set boxes
Day 115
Well I guess the squeaky wheel will get the grease. After calling for 7 days in a row it went from 5 to 7 today. Hopefully the grades will be better than the latest ones I’ve received.
Anyone have any updates on recent submissions? I assume that the National bogged down grading.
5 day turnaround.

I sent a couple submissions in on the 80s special. They arrived August 1 and nothing has been entered in their system yet. I assume due to the National, because it's taking longer than any thing I've ever submitted before.
I has a 7/28 arrival go to Level 3 yesterday so maybe a day or two away
Shipped 80s special on 7/17. Went to 'Grading' on 8/5.
I reported an error with 1 of the cards on 8/5. Haven't heard back yet.
I have a 26 ticket on economy submission.
Arrived: 4/21/23
Entered: 4/24/23
Last week it said grades were ready but could not access them. Now the grades ready sign is gone and back to Q2. Anybody have this happen>
