What do YOU do with US Mint product packaging?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,447 ✭✭✭✭✭

I like a nice package, I really do, but some of the packaging the mint does seems excessive, and will be wasted, to me.
Recently sold most of my proof/sets Silver American Eagles.

I don't mind the small proof boxes. I was ok with the 2006 3-coin set and boxes, but the 2 coin set packages were even bigger than the 3 coin, and the 2011 Annv set was huge and heavy. I'm getting ready to junk my last 4 (empty) boxes of those this weekend. I've kept them since I submitted to PCGS in 2011, but, 12 years later, they take up space and, while I feel bad about junking them, they aren't worth keeping...and are too heavy to easily ship out cheaply.

I'm a collector (starting to "play" dealer a couple times a year, to wind down some of the collection), but even I don't want to collect the large/heavy presentation boxes. Seems like a waste to me.

Do "you" keep AND display the boxes?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I sell the packaging. It always comes into favor in cycles. Check the bst board right now, and there’s a couple ads wanting proof gold eagle packaging. A lot of times having the packaging will increase the value of the coin if it’s graded because it’s an original complete set.

I just hauled a barrel of empty mint product packaging to a small storage unit where we keep our Christmas decorations.

Actually it's probably for raw coins. Current price is spot+$830 with packaging but only spot+$240 for the coin alone. Makes the box worth $600. Lol

You won’t have be concerned about mint packaging in the future. Now it’s gone from sometimes excessive to a garbage embarrassment. All of it is an example of maximizing mint income. The mint overcharges for just about everything and puts it in the cheapest packaging it can. Maybe Proof sets will come in one envelope that you dump out on a table. If you think I am an unhappy mint customer, you are right.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

eBay has a lot listed and as mentioned they can help complete a display. Also those older ones are way nicer than the new cardboard fuzzy stuff junk. Thanks 🙏

Everything I have and have bought from the mint is still in OGP. I don't plan on ever having any graded. I think it's easier to sell being original.

I keep it. All proof sets, mint sets, commemorative coins and silver eagles are still in their original government packaging. All mint packaging 1955 to date in these formats.

    Some things are.
Some things are easier (higher realized prices) when graded....IF it gets a high grade.
At that point, when selling, not everyone seems to care about the original packaging.

My example of the 2011 Annv SAE set shows that. The HEAVY boxes they come in would cost an arm and a leg (due to weight if shipping too many to fit in single larger flat rate box.) to ship. Person I sold the almost 4 sets to, only wanted the graded coins and not the original packaging (largely due to shipping logistics).
I think most of the SAE anniversary sets are that way.
Individual proofs, unless a PR70, do seem to have people wanting their original packaging.

Same here, but I have yet to sell anything...

Agreed. Huge and heavy. Like the annual Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets, if you buy those remember those coins have all been previously released by the mint during the year, you are simply buying the new packaging for extra money. Huge box packaging. Perhaps it will be a gift for someone....then it's a pretty sharp presentation box...but if you are just collecting, then you are definitely eating up space.

I have acquired some mint products over the years... ASE's, AGE's, special sets and special issues... I have kept them in the mint boxes for the most part. Just seems better that way. They do take up some space, but not really a problem. Cheers, RickO

I’m thinking about what @ricko said
I believe I can handle the extra space problem considering the alternative is having nothing. A problem I hope continues for many years to come. 😁

Anything I have left from the Mint stays in mint packaging. I don't actively buy that stuff anymore, as I find most of it wholly unappealing and priced excessively.
I never really understood the need to get anything slabbed and then pay for Trueviews. Same boring pictures of identical coins in largely identical grades. Does nothing for me.
The exception of course, is something like the 1995 W proof silver eagle or the 1945 limited AGE with privy that is worth so much more than issue price.
But even those bore me! 😴

Guess I'm in the minority. As a collector I don't ever plan on selling. When the time comes for my dirt nap, my boys can complain about no packaging. My safe is full to the point that I have my rolls of wheats, Jeffersons and silver Roosies stored unsecured.

Deep 6 / trash can for USM pkg. I sell coins not packaging. Raw coins - 2x2 holder / flip - raw coin binder for shows. Now USM commem silver dollars might keep them in orig USM pkg.

In Mint Packaging, wrapped tightly in a discreet brown box.
How about the 2009 UHR box?? Now, that is a beast.

    Hey now!
That looks almost exactly like how I packaged my last shipment to a board member I sold to!

The 2020 (limited to a mintage of 1945) AGE with privy. Ridiculously low mintage to create artificial value. Look how rare it is! Ooooooh.

Keep it. My coins in capsules go into the SDB and the packaging goes into the closet. If I sell them, I reassemble to ship.

The silver 2020 is holding pretty well at $800 ish for the 70’s and $350 ish in 69. Not bad. The gold issue is a very big winner. Thanks 🙏

Many years ago.... as a much younger person.... there is one memory that remains with me when I went to my first really large coin show.

That memory was the the multiple large trash barrels right inside the entrance.... filled with US Mint and foreign mint packaging! Loads and loads of it all being thrown away.

Maybe we should go back to flat packs for proof sets and mint sets...

While I agree that it is an artificial rarity, the value certainly isnt artificial! I wouldve LOVED to have scored one of these from the Mint. It would have been flipped so quickly for something that was more interesting to me. The ultimate homerun to those who got through that day (and the various mornings after!) Still jealous lol :D

I seldom buy modern products, but for the few that I have in my type set I keep the custom boxes. I collect UK coronation medals and try to buy with the original Royal Mint boxes. Collectors 100 years from now may do the same.
