what Joys (horrors) will I find

ad4400ad4400 Posts: 2,115 ✭✭✭✭✭

My mom recently had to move out of my house to a memory care facility. I've been going through her things and found a box with these contents. I remember her getting solicitations on the value of coin as an investment was I was a boy (probably 4th or 5th grade) around of the silver/gold boom of early 80s. Slick promotional material talking about how "common dates" didn't exist because they were all melted, a promise to buy back at huge returns if the packages were never opened, graphs on how the value of coins had soared, with no end of upward trajectory in sight.

Having collected for years now and very much aware of the over promotion that is peddled, I have my expectations set of what’s inside.

    Wow!
    Beautiful exploring ahead!
The sides of those 1922 Peace Dollars look very promising.
    Along, with the 1921 Morgans.
Don't forget about the various varieties too!
    Good Luck my friend.
    Sorry about Ma.

With silver booming again I’m sure there’s still some pretty good value in there. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about the move.... :'(

Depending on when the purchases were made, you might still be OK financially. But in any case, they presumably provided her with some degree of happiness and/or security over the years, so there's value in that, as well.

I wish you and your Mom great luck. Never can tell, while most likely silver value, always the possibility of a sleeper.

Sorry about your mother. That's always a tough transition. My folks are getting up in age too, but still live at their house.
Judging from the reeded edges I can see in the photo, it looks very promising on finding some good stuff there! Please post your findings when you can.

I don't know if you calculated the Silver value? But here's a quick ball park figure I came up with.
    Approximately,
    $2000
Just in Silver value not Numismatic value or in variety value.
    Awesome, dude.

Great advice. Is there a web site that shows the major VAM varieties and the pickup points to look for?

Sorry about your mom, I hope she gets the care she needs
You say that you have collected coins so I'm sure you know some things about coins. That roll of 1922 Peace dollors, are there any with Mint Marks? That would be something to look for right off the bat.
This is the place to ask questions, please ask here first. Take pics of the coins that you are not sure of.

The edges of the 1922 roll are uniform, suggesting that it's not a put-together roll, probably 63-64 coins, maybe a 65 or two if you're lucky. The 1884-P roll could contain pleasant surprises. The 1883-O roll, if typical, would be 62-64 by today's standards. Rolls of 1921 Morgans, even if original, are usually not great coins. The rolls of halves will fluctuate with the price of silver.

I hope your mom does well in her new environment.

Don't sleep on those 1964 halves, lots of nice varieties on those as well. Here's a link to CONECA's Variety Vista for reference.

Thank you to everyone for the concern over my mom. Thanks also for the advice on what to look for. Below are a few iPhone pictures. At least for the peace dollars, The look is pretty representative. Any thoughts on how to get the best sell price on what I would call AU detail common date peace dollar.

The edge view of these '22s looked promising, but....
Hope the Morgans are a nice surprise.

Those Peace Dollars are rough. I’d shop around a few places but I would expect about melt value.
