I have been waiting on an 1844 for a long time. I hate hesitating on pulling the trigger on this coin but want some educated eyes on it first. GTG and let me know your overall opinion of this Cent. Thanks for your help. I had it as MS62..a few small patches of oxidation on the obverse. I guess it got a 1 point color/eye appeal bump. Reminds me of my 1846 Small Date MS64.

Such a beauty!
My problem with grading these via a photo is I look at this cent and think, "MS63 all day long"!
Then I look again and think. . . "is this possibly an AU coin?!"
I am terrible at determining other than to state it is lovely and scarce so well preserved.

My initial thought is MS64BN. Whatever the actual grade, that is a real beauty! I really like early copper that is mostly brown with some red peeking out.

Very nice looking! Looks MS.
I'm naming it Lava Coin. Looks like it came from a volcano.

AU55 but possibly graded as AU58 or MS62.
AU-55
Tough to say without coin in-hand but if the breaks in luster over LIBERTY and above the ear are rub, then I could see it in a 58 holder, if not... then MS62. Also, it's a more difficult date (1840-44) in the Late Date run to find nice.

MS63BN Obverse is RedBrown but I think the Reverse would hold it to Brown. The coin pretty much matches Photograde's MS63. Nice coin regardless.

62.I would keep looking.
My guess is AU55, but these are tough for me.

58, or 62.
I have a late date recently graded with slightly sharper details that came back 58….but I had submitted it as I’d seen similar coins grade 62/63.
Regardless I like this coin, and as pointed out, it’s a tougher date to find in nice condition. It’s a date on my upgrade list, and there aren’t many I need!
I'm in this camp 🏕 as well
Au55

I have dabbled with a date set, and I suppose the 1844 might be hard to get.
These coins that some to have mint red, but then have dull fields, leave me baffled. I can't really buy them from pictures because you don't really know what's left of the mint luster. Mint red means less to me that to most collectors, because it can come out of bottle and be gone in a few months.
Here's the kind of Mint State large cent I like. This looks under graded to me as an MS-63, Brown.
This 1846 is graded AU-55. It only cost me $110. If I could do the whole late date set with these, I'd be satisfied, but not ecstatic
I also guess 55.

It's not an MS coin and may have been played with.

Jumping on the bandwagon: 55 but graded 63.
Smitten with DBLCs.
I'm another that is trying to figure if it is AU or MS. I lean more towards AU58 but wouldn't be surprised at MS63.
62 but could be in a 63 holder if luster is strong.

55 or 58 for me
As mentioned in my earlier post, I would not pay a MS63BN price for that coin.
@RLSnapper ... Very nice old copper.... Did you finally buy it?? Cheers, RickO
@ricko It's new inventory so I am going to wait a bit then see if I can negotiate a better price. The dealer wants MS63 money and the consensus opinion is it is not worth MS 63 money. I like the look but don't have to have it now. It would be my most expensive coin in my set so I will wait and see.
Typical AU/63 thing yet again. I'm out at anything near 63 money

I like the color better in the added pics, but now the scratches near star 2 are more evident.
Oops that’s a different coin Lol!
Wait a minute... two different dates in the OP... a 1844 and new images of an 1846 showing scratches at star two... whud'up??

I have the 1846....it's PCGS MS64BN. I was just commenting that the 1844 reminded me of the 1846 color wise.
A nice catch!
