Come on. That .925 is ok.

I have quite a bid buried away but this was out. I should be good on reference material from the 70s.

During the Hunt Brother silver run-up a lot of the Franklin Mint stuff came into the shop. At the time, .925 or Sterling Silver went for a significant discount over .999. I had a set of statehood one ounce bars that came from, maybe the Hamilton Mint, and the were .999 and folks were buying that stuff at melt +. A lot of the sterling stuff went to the refineries never to be seen again. I would think that a lot of the Franklin Mint stuff from that era got melted in the run up (silver reached $50 ounce then crashed on Monday down to $28 and dropping. We lost a lot of money.

Guys who had been buying junk silver coins at 3 or 4 or more and had bags unloaded them in the range of $27,000 cash and then the next week bought them back at $11,000 or less. What a roller coaster ride.

But, in the earlier years of FM I bought a lot of coins they produced and was very proud of them for a long time.

I just sold a complete Franklin Mint States of the Union Sterling Silver Proof Medals set from 1969 for my in-laws last Saturday for melt, if that counts. They got it as a wedding present but just wanted to cash it in so I sold it for them.

The Franklin Mint has produced some interesting issues and rarities. A minor set I'm working on is Bahamas One Cent pieces. There are some very low mintage pieces, done by this mint, that are tougher to obtain than the values would otherwise indicate. I'd be curious if any of the catalogs like those posted above feature mintages that are absent from Krause and Numista.

I can relate to Klif50's experiences. I also worked in a busy coin shop in the late '70s and early '80s. During the runup in 1979-1980 there were lines out the door of people trying to sell anything that even looked like gold and silver. We must have sent tons of silver to the smelter, a lot of which was issued by the Franklin Mint. I retrieved a few pieces, but silver was selling for twice what it is today, so I had to be selective.

I had worked at United Bank of Denver prior to working at the coin shop. There was a set of 50 or 100 bars for various banks. I saved this one from the melting pot.

I'm also a registered member of the Seneca Indian tribe, so I had to save this one.

I just liked the looks of this one.

In the mid-1970s, I liked the designs of coins from the Bahamas.
