Thoughts on this 1816 Large Cent

This was my best pick-up from the recent Baltimore show. I'm still playing around with white balance on my camera setup, but I think this is pretty close. There's some funky coloring (especially on the reverse) but I think it's attributable to being stored in an oak keg with another coin pressed up against it... sort of like bag toning on silver... but this is just speculation...
Edited to add: thoughts, comments, and grade opinions welcomed.

Very nice coin! I don't mind the color difference too much, great details.
Tonedeaf is a nickname given to me in reference to my guitar playing ability.
I like it. Nice strike. Shame about stain.
Still nice.

Nice and mark free. I believe you bought it as an AU58 which is a fair grade. If you like the funky toning then that's all that matters, I have a feeling you will be enjoying her for many years to come.
Very cool, I’ve never seen toning that extensive on a Randall hoard cent before.
That's a neat piece!

Hi Greg... thanks for weighing in... funny you mention Randall Hoard. Tom was talking about it too and apparently 1816 N2 was included in the Hoard... but there's no clear provenance with this coin.

Very nice coin, thank you for sharing! What's going on with the obverse rim from 1-4 O'Clock?

These are the type of coins I really am drawn to. It has character, which distinguishes it from all others. I think it's a great coin, with awesome detail and I like the odd toning.

Interesting coin. You have an 1816 mint set there. I like it.

Rim crumbling consistent with N2. Also, there's a double base of the N in ONE on the reverse

I like! Nice original coin
Good strike, interesting luster, but I don't think I'd go for it.
I knew it would happen.
Nice old copper .... Just something about these old cents that I find attractive. Perhaps it is knowing that a cent was - at that time - a meaningful piece of money, and was extensively used in commerce. Cheers, RickO
I would say that it is your classic MS-60 or 61. It has Mint State sharpness, and probably some mint luster, although you can't see it in the photos. The two tone color is distracting and, for me, accounts for the lower grade.
These Randal Hoard coins were stored in kegs, and I think that dampness was involved with some of them. That combined with whatever wood can do to a coin might be involved here.
I'll post this one which is graded MS-63, Brown.
