Couple of questions or 3 on a 1970 D Kennedy.

- Do you think this coin would make MS66?
- Should I give it a rinse for the mint pack blues or would that make it even worse?

I don't think it will come close to a 66. Too much scrapes/chatter in Kennedys hair besides the cheek chatter and also looks like cleaning lines on the reverse. I wouldn't be surprised if it wouldn't get a details grade. Jmo

Not even close, yikes. We’ll that’s why I asked. It’s the best I’ve found so far but not cleaned as I just removed it from the cellophane. New series for me so, much to learn.
Those lines appear to be running underneath the stars. That would be a tricky cleaning 😉
Not a 66![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
The lines on the reverse look like die polish. If it were a GTG I probably would have said 64-65. I think @cladking can offer advice regarding a rinse.
Thanks for the input guys so, is it the damage more than the strike here?
Or just not enough or too much of the other?
Trying to give a technical evaluation/ starting point for the grade according to wear? And then count down for hits and up for eye appeal? I guess once you can see it you just see it.
So does that mean that the heavy strike on this 1982 carried it to a 66 even with the deep cuts? Or that this almost flawless 1972 was held back to a 67?
There are enough small contact marks on the cheek and shield to keep it from a 66.
I would guess a 65 or maybe a 64 on a bad day.
Coin has stains/milk spots on it. It should grade 64, if the spots come off, possibly 65. Not something I’d throw good money at.
Still nice! I like it at 65.
Looks like a 64 or 65 to me.... Probably 64. Cheers, RickO
Didn't know it was still in cello. That can account for the lines I'm seeing. I will retract my Details guess and say 64. Lol

It does need a good soak in acetone. The luster should be improved markedly.
I like the coin. I don't see it as a 66 but it looks like a fairly solid MS-65 under the hazing.
These are a little tough even in 65. I'd estimate this one would be in the top 3 or 4% of all the '70-D's made. Of course I'm still assuming there's more luster under the haze.
Well, the fields look 66. even with the staining, but the cheek does not look 66 and whatever is going on in the middle of the hair does not look 66. So, I'm thinking it's a 5. I admit that I have very little experience with grading these moderns, but I am considering buying several of them (70-Ds) and sending in under an economy submission.

I'll try the acetone soak and find an album for it most likely. I don't remember getting good results from the last soaking and then became impatient and then dipped in silver cleaner (only 5 seconds) but the result was a very very clean dipped looking coin that lost at least a grade point.
I think if the responses were in favor of grading I would then just use the conservation service so I would not screw it up.
From your pictures, I would say at best it would grade out as a ms65.
I would not spend the money to have it graded but it is your coin and what to do with it is up to you.
There are many ms65’s on the bay for short money as compared to an ms66.

Kennedys are my quest...
Thanks for piling on - just kidding but you're my Kennedy guy.![:D :D](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
I can't promise you I won't have it graded but I'll try not to
If you do have it graded, please let us know the final outcome.

Kennedys are my quest...
Soaking didn't do much on the original coin.
I did give this one a soaking and it looks better. Do you think it has a shot at 66? Luster is pretty good but the hits in the left field...
The second one is 65 all day, IMO, maybe shot at 66 if the chatter in the field in front of the portrait doesn't hold it back. Nice pics as well.
I will later picture two 1970 D halves got in the wild. I thought them 66 for sure but both came back 65 from our hosts...They were both lustre bombs in hand with possibly less contact than the OP coin. I will try to photo with cell phone tomorrow; the second in hand looks really excellent but they look to be tough on grading IMHO.
Well, just Love coins, period.
Yeah well I can already tell you they’re tough on grading
At some point it’s just gonna come down to whether you like the coin or not regardless of the grade. For the record I’d still like to have the 66.
Thank you, it’s a work in progress.
When the newest batch of 1970-Ds of Kennedy halves that PCGS graded MS67, a lot of them looked worse than the one you photographed. Sometimes you just have to roll the dice and see what happens.
Found two more decent ones in my own stash they were both tarnished so much you couldn’t see they had something to hide. Here’s the second one.
