Uggo. Maybe it will appeal to people that like acorns.

No way. I don't like the coin one bit. And I'm sure the price will be outrageous!

Yikes, that is so ugly - even the eagle is not well done. The oak leaves and acorns? IMHO not well done. Way too high a premium!

I am surprised that the Mint hasn't changed the grid pricing for Platinum. As aggressive as they have been with Silver, I would assume they would be as aggressive on Platinum as well.

Leaving a minimum of $330,000.00 on the table...

So, what's the connection between acorns and freedom of the press? Pass, price will be mint moon money.

I stopped buying these some time ago. Design wasnt doing it for me, and the price, and I think they stopped doing fractional coins. Too rich for my blood cholesterol. ;)

  • batumibatumi Posts: 816 ✭✭✭✭

I probably will purchase one-just not now. I have purchased all of mine on the secondary market for bullion related prices for '70's. I feel the Plats are a good value today as a contrarian bet, just not with the steep premium from the USM.

Guess platinum jumped a bit since your estimate, @MetroD.

I doubt many dealers will even buy this in quantity as it seriously looks pretty bad, and way overpriced. A graded PR69 if sent in after purchasing from the mint will be close to a $500 loss after grading.

Very depressing to me as I have collected them all, and just can't see any logical reason to continue.

Is the Mint really expecting to sell many of these with a 61% premium? Platinum is only $959.

May be the new key to the series. LOL.

Every year I buy a couple of platinum proof $100 Eagles. Some 70's , some 69's. I've probably paid $300-600 premiums over the years for proofs. On non proofs I've paid $100 over melt. Platinum is so unloved (perhaps not a great use case), that I look at 8000-12000 coins per year minted ($100) and I dream that one day the collecting world will find it. I just hope to be around when that day comes.

    @jkrk Good luck on that

Not one I will buy... One I would consider, they likely will never produce... the Second Amendment would be a great coin... And it would sell very well... but they will not make one. Cheers, RickO

The Mint will not produce 12,000 coins as long as there is still over 3,000 of the 2018 coins available...

I had no idea. 3,000 five year old coins still on the shelf, I would think it's melt time.

The Mint has sold a total of 55 2018 coins in CY2023. The Mint sold a total of 712 2018 coins in CY2022.
As long as they are selling as well as they are, the Mint will keep them on the website...

857 sold at the 15 minute mark.

Sales are really slowing down now.

Amazing how people complain about $100 over spot at the LCS but buy this at $600 over.

Has anybody here bought this coin yet? Doesn't seem to be much of a demand around here. :)

Allocation was apparently 2500. Sales will tell if the various distributors actually purchased and took delivery of their allocation.

Despite the wording on the APMEX website, I thought that this might be the case.

    Thanks for pointing it out.

Look forward to the next sales report. :)

Part of my frustration with the pricing and buying these direct from the Mint is that the past several years, mine have had small flaws and returns take too much time and effort. I continue to believe that eventually platinum metal pricing will improve to reflect its scarcity and use in hydrogen fuel cells.

This coin will probably have total sales similar to 2020, 2021, and 2022, at around 10,000. After looking at the nice links that @MetroD provided, there was some rationale for the design selection. It could have been this version :)

Whoa, she looks to have the attitude of a "good government worker"....LOL
That design is worse than the current one....
I liked the ?2016 flying liberty one they stole from the Italian 20c design....

That is the point of the design. Even the fonts are diverse.

Assuming the weekly cumulative sales figures capture info through 11:59 PM (ET) on Sunday, the following should be relevant.

At 11:59 PM (ET) on 02/26/23, the Mint website showed the following for 23EJ:

    Source

    Website Sales:
    Start - End = Sales
    6,200 - 3,217 = 2,983

Unless I missed something, the balance of the pending W/E 02/26/23 numbers should be attributable to the ABPP.

The artists need the PC shackles removed to enable decent designs that will sell, and people will wish to purchase ala the Weinman SLH and Mercury dime, ASG ten and twenty dollar gold, McNeil SLQ, the Peace dollar, Buffalo nickels, Indian two and a half and five dollar gold. Designs over 100 years old that USM is replicating today. Almost all current and commems in the USA are an embarrassment today in comparison to most issued by other countries. Small wonder why sales have fallen off the cliff.
