Recall that we are attempting to quantify the number of ABPP coins associated with this release.

    Cumulative Sales Figures:

    Source: https://www.usmint.gov/about/production-sales-figures/cumulative-sales

    The Math (W/E 02/26/23):
Total Sales - Website Sales = ABPP Sales
    9,620 - 2,983 = 6,637

I clearly made a mistake. The ABPP sales were supposed to be, or were supposed to be capped at, 2,500. The resulting figure is significantly higher than 2,500 units.

What did I miss? Is this release part of the numismatic bulk purchase program?

Not a blowout. It is basically the same as the past several years. Pricing does not seem to slow them down as it appears there are almost 10,000 folks who still like to collect them. I ordered the 70 for my complete set from Pinehurst. Cheaper and with less risk than getting it from the Mint.

"The Mint may, at any time, add new coin programs to the Numismatic Bulk Purchase Program as they are approved and made available."

The bulk purchasers get a 3-5% discount from the Mint and a discount from bulk grading. It is difficult to justify buying from the mint individually anymore if you want graded 70's.

The most important numbers from the United States Mint, when it comes to Gold, Platinum or Palladium, are Launch week sales. Not Overall sales.

    2020 Launch Week sales = 3,925
    2021 Launch Week sales = 4,961
    2022 Launch Week sales = 6,668
    2023 Launch Week sales = 9,620

    9,620 is Blowout...

There is a difference between bulk purchasers and the Authorized Bulk Purchasers Program. The ABPP do Not get a discount. They pay a Premium and they have to pick up the product at Southaven, Mississippi (Memphis). For the 2021 Morgan Silver dollars and the Peace Silver dollars, the ABPP had to pay a 5% Premium...

The ABPP like the first day of issue label $$$ premiums they get on graded coins, so they arrange for the first day pickup.

There were no household limits and other bulk purchasers must have had some significant impact on early sales.

Are you now predicting a 12,000-coin sellout soon?

Maybe everyone rushed to buy these on launch week because they were afraid of more inflationary Mint price increases, if they waited ;)

Contrary to most commenters so far, I really like the design. Unfortunately this just doesn’t fit it my collecting budget. If they produced a silver version for <$100, I’d likely be a buyer.

Yes I have changed my opinion on the 12,000 mintage. Even today there were reported sales of 43 for the 2022 issue and 18 for the 2018 issue.

The coin design didn't seem to match Freedom of the Press to me at first, and so I was initially critical of it. Then I saw the link above that explained the 5-year Liberty plan from seedling to enduring oak tree and it all made more sense. I suspect many will want to collect the complete 5-coin series which may result in a sellout over time.

The single oak tree in my yard is my favorite of dozens of varieties that I planted the past 20 years. It took over ten years before we got the first small acorns from it. The squirrels love it now. I buried my brothers' ashes in its roots several years ago so that we can remember him as we watch the tree grow, and hopefully, like Liberty, it endures.

With all due respect, this couldn’t be further from the truth of the situation. But, no a bad guess. Lol.

I am curious now, so what is the real reason the ABPP pay a premium to pick them up in Mississippi?

APMEX is asking $500 more for the 'AR' designation than the 'FDI' designation.

  • GoldminersGoldminers Posts: 3,975 ✭✭✭✭✭

So, they like the AR label even more. That is surprising that it has become so popular for some.
Not a label I am interested in paying that much extra for.

It's a squirrely looking coin. So the Mint would definitely like you to "squirrel it away" no matter the price or aesthetics

You would have to be nuttier than a fruit cake to pay $500 extra for this coin in an AR label ;)

Perfect timing by the Mint to issue the "Freedom of the Press to Pick a Side and Stick with it No Matter What".

    I'm kidding, just kidding around.

No, I will not be buying that issue.

Now, what about the US Mint truck driving from West Point to Mississippi with freshly minted coins, and, like a food truck, stopping at major cities along the way and selling fresh coins right from the truck! Would you pay $500 extra for a “Newark, NJ special”? Only 5 coins ever sold at that stop!
