1886 O Morgan - Worth Grading?

Looking for some advise on what grade I could potential get through PCGS for my 1886 O Morgan. I haven't sent a coin in before so I also would have the membership fee to consider.

I am concerned about the damage on the nose and the heavy toning. Originally I posted in the Q&A forum, but there wasn't a ton of movement in responses.

Thanks in advance.

Looks to be AU. Probably not worth getting slabbed. But that hasn't stopped people before. There are coins literally worth one or two dollars that are certified.

Looks high AU for the details, my only concern is if the toning would get the dreaded AT. The rev looks good but the obv seems a bit questionable. The real question is will it have a market value higher than your cost of the coin plus the fees to grade/slab assuming that it straight grades. If I had a group going I would likely roll the dice and send it in, not so much if this was the only coin I wanted to send.

It's a gamble with the color, but it looks to be in the upper AU range. How's the luster?

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

The coin looks to be approximately AU55 in terms of details, with questionable color. My guess is that you’d net more selling it as is, than you would by having it graded, first.

Like the Date, decent coin too.
But, I honestly would not spend the money on slabbing it.

You could try Anacs or Icg which would give you a numerical AU grade even if it details grades, ie AU55 details noting the issue.

Not a ton of luster. Where you see the lighter areas it shows some more. Took some more photos outside of the 2x2, with flash and without.

Never heard of the grade AT. Tried google and didn't find anything. Can you explain some?

    AT means artificially toned.

Done by a person with chemicals to tone the coin, give it color

Seems darker then other silver coins I seen. Hope that's not the case. Thanks for the clarification.

PCGS refers to it as QC (questionable color). Here is a link to the code 91 QC for it.

The coin would likely grade AU 55... but may get details due to questionable color - or AT - as frequently termed. Even if straight graded, I question the value of submitting it. Best to sell as is and invest in an already slabbed coin you like. Cheers, RickO

The toning is what will kill the chances of a straight grade, as others have pointed out. It's still a nice coin, and a rarer date.

Great coin for an album. Agree Au55 grade, the dark photos look ok, the other photos could be AT. That might be a coin that a gentle MS70 swab might remove the questionable color/toning.

    What are your goals?

Keeping it to enjoy it? If so, there's no reason to pay for grading & certification.
Selling? Some coins sell for enough more when graded to justify shipping and gradings costs. This probably isn't one of them.
Registry set? In this case, you'll need to have it graded, but again, you're likely better off to sell it and buy one already slabbed.
To have a dull, ugly coin without color? In this case, go ahead and dip it, but what you end up with will be ugly.
To possibly, perhaps improve its look a little bit? If so, the advice above to treat it gently with some MS70 could work.... but could also leave it worse. Far better to sell and buy one with the look you want.

An AU55 is a $150+ coin, an AU58, which it probably is not, is a $300 + coin. Hate to say but ANACS or ICG might be an option. I'd show in hand to someone knowledgeable of grading.

    No.

I would not have it graded.
    No upside.
Looks QC, and from your images the toning is neutral to negative in eye appeal.

Looks like a nice Album coin to me. I wouldn't bother getting it graded.

  • Thanks everyone for responding. I plan on just holding onto it. Was never really a coin I would sell. Just one of the better date coins that I would have considered grading.

Based on everyone suggested grades and the value it has, I'll just hold onto it for now. I'll take it to a local coin shop to see what they think as well.
