So, The Wife Dragged Me to a Garage Sale today

Shane6596Shane6596 Posts: 759 ✭✭✭✭✭

She was out garage shopping. Came home, said she needed the truck to get a cabinet she found. So i went back with her to help
load it.

Walking thru the garage sale i saw on a table a shoebox with coins in it. Most were world coins from different countries. I dug thru it and found a few US coins and some others that look like tokens or something. I asked how much, and she said i dont know, a dollar a piece? So i handed her 5 bux and was on my way with coins and a cabinet.

The one looks like its an EAC, cant read date. The other is an 1826 half that should be worth a few dollars. The v nickel, no idea. The others ill have to research.

Was worth going in my book. Any old cool coins are fun.

Nice job with the 1826! The V looks like a 1912-S so that's not bad either.

Nice buy! The Liberty nickel appears to be either a 1912-D or -S, if it's the latter you have two winners.

5 bux for the coins AND the cabinet? Awesome deal!

Seriously, great buy on the coins!

Uhhhh that is insane!! A buck a piece!!

Not 100% confident but I think the nickel has a D mintmark. I am drooling over that bust half that you purchased for 2x face. Great finds!

The V nickel is a 1912-D, in about F12 condition, value about $10-$15. Still an awesome find for a garage sale!

Two of those are easily worth about 60. between the pair (1826 Half and 12-D Nickel).

I’d pay at least that just for the half myself, looks like a wholesome F15? I assume it’s a common Overton variety….but the experts can speak to that.

Looks like an O-110, fairly common at R2, but I agree, pretty wholesome and that's probably pushing my estimate even with the reverse pie cuts (which keeps it out of straight grade consideration)

@Shane6596 ... Nice finds at the garage sale. I have found a few coins at those over the years... Not counting the retired jeweler/dealer that puts out overpriced stuff once a year, that is... Been looking for a Sacagawea Cheerios coin... have not found one yet... but I know they are out there... ;) Cheers, RickO

Since you asked, and it was friggin heavy. She wants to use it as a temp pantry until kitchen gets redone.

Appears her motives may be a kitchen remodel 😁

The 1826 if it’s genuine. Either heirs who don’t know what they have or counterfeit. I’d send the 1826 to our hosts. You have to unfortunately have your detector on with yard sales. Either you can win big or you can miss big time.

  • Jzyskowski1Jzyskowski1 Posts: 6,650 ✭✭✭✭✭

Never thought of using a metal detector like that. Very interesting as I was contemplating a metal detector and a metal thing for checking authenticity like the jewelers use. ( correct me please)
This is a point in favor of the detector. 🧐

Maybe they were savvy businessmen, salting a few coins cheap to make you overlook the fact that they WAY overcharged your wife for the cabinet? :o;) Nice finds there! :)

    Very nice score!
You never know what you're going to come across at yard sales, and the general public know almost nothing about coins.
