Need some guidance

ElcontadorElcontador Posts: 7,562 ✭✭✭✭✭

I went through some coins I bought 50 + years ago as a kid and this and that over the years that I don't need any longer. Would like to sell them and get one coin with the proceeds.

I'm looking a raw 1910 S through 1915 S cents, most VF to XF. A 24 D and 26 S in VF, a 23 S that was graded AU, and a few VF - XF coins from the early 1930s (not a 31 S). Have a number of RD rolls of Lincoln Memorial Cents - I think 1959 - 1964 P & D, and some from the late 1960s, early 1970s and early 1980s. I got many of these coins right when they came out from the mint, so some may be 67 or 68 RD. Honestly, some look like I got them yesterday from the mint. I don't know if a bulk submission would make sense for these coins.

Have two mint sewn bags of 2000 P and D Massachusetts Quarter, face value $25 each.

Also have an assortment of Unc. Roosevelt Dimes from the 1950s and 60s, and a few odd 1960 vintage PF cents and Nickels. I have some Roosevelt Dimes circa 1960 -1963 that probably grade MS 66 or MS 67, but I don't want to pay grading fees exceeding their value, so I've left them alone.

I'm not set up to photograph them and I don't do E-bay, so I'm thinking of maybe bringing them to the next Long Beach Show. Perhaps a collector may be interested, or maybe a dealer would buy them and give me a fair price for this material.

Perhaps I can see what I can get for the above and buy an 09 S Lincoln (not interested in the VDB).

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I've had most of this material for between 50 and 60 years, and it's not like any family members are interested in it.

Have you tried the BST (Buy/Sell/Trade) forum here? People generally like a photo or two, even if it's from your phone.

I think you could do just as well by putting things into lots and selling on the BST, just a bit of time to group some stuff and take a handful of cell phone photos. Do not expect to get top dollar if you are not able or willing to put in the time and effort to photograph individual items. People are only going to pay MS67 prices if you can prove that you have MS67 material. I would expect you would get offers of close to 50% market value at LB anyway, depends on how much effort you want to put into this goal.

Most of the coins you mention are not going to generate much excitement among buyers. The early mintmarked Lincolns will be easy to sell but the later raw coins may not even draw an offer. The late coins have to have plastic to have any value. Don't start spending a lot of money trying to get the best price for those coins. The Lincolns may sell well on the BST or at a local dealer or show.

Search the rolls for Gems and varieties. Very few of these will be worth the cost of grading. Once you open the rolls they'll lose their typically nominal numismatic premium.

A lot of this stuff is just easier to haul to the bank.

There's demand for the old wheaties but finding it might prove disappointing.

Awhile back, I had a roll of nice Unc. RD 56 D Wheaties. I went through a large auction site, where someone went through the coins. I was able to get a bulk grading on MS 66 or better. I think the TPG made out better than I did, but I still netted $300-$400 from the auction house. I don't know what a roll of 69 S cents in RD 7 would go for, and what I would wind up with when all was said and done.

What ive done with things i dont want to itemize, take pics of, is get a relative to do it. Niece, nephew, son, daughter...kids are usually willing to do phone pics and post online.

For a small fee of course :D

But it saves me alot of time.

@Elcontador ... First try the BST with decent pictures... That would be the least work and no fees. Good luck, Cheers, RickO

If it were me, I'd be focused on selling the whole lot, take a bath as necessary, and ridding myself of the burden. Visit your local coin dealer.

A local dealer is likely only going to have interest in the better wheats and silver items and will tell you to just spend the rolls of Memorials and the state quarters. No offense but my advice is to go that route and not waste time hauling that stuff to a big show or shooting pics of things frankly not worth the hassle of packing and shipping to someone for the minimal amount over face that even an interested collector would pay.

I'll buy the early dates sight unseen, if you except returns with Paypal. Put a number together and message me!

Yep. Did that. But with a conglomerate foreign coin website dealer. THEY have the outlet for stuff like that.
Not worth the hassle to do it yourself.
