He who hesitates...

Don't you hate it when you identify a newly listed coin as a winner and hesitate on the purchase. Twice this week I lost a coin that had been listed less than a week. One I made an offer on Ebay that was at the top of my $$ limit ...offer rejected and coin sold 3 days later sold best offer. The other I asked for pictures if the coin in the holder after speaking with the dealer. Next day coin was listed as SOLD.
Now...both these coins were at the very top of my price zone...I couldn't afford both.....but I am disappointed not to get either. I will put a positive spin on this...my eye is good for the coins I need for my set. If I identify a special one grab it...some other well trained eyes are looking as well. This gives me confidence moving forward on new purchases...even if they are $$$$.

I am a victim of my lacking funds myself. I was the under bidder on an excellent EDS 1849/6 H10C. I wanted to hit that bid button again, but my slush fund would not allow it. I need to sell some stuff to increase my ability to acquire to unreachable.
Continued success.

I feel your pain. I had been eyeballing an 1883-CC DMPL Morgan on Ebay, and had the funds to buy it but hesitated because it would have left me with little funds to buy anything else. I went to get it a few days later and it was already gone. Maybe some member here got it, I hope! If so, Congrats to them! I learned my lesson, and won't balk again. LOL

Unfortunately for collectors when a new coin is first listed that’s very difficult to find and it has all the bells and whistles we have to make a very spontaneous decision or someone else will buy it.
Do you find that buying a premium coin like that on Ebay is expensive relative to FMV ? Or is that coin in that condition so tough to find that you have to pay up wherever and whenever it shows up ?
I don't mind paying a premium for DMPL's like this one, if that's what you are asking, and the Trueview is a big plus for me because I'm putting them into a Registry set. It was an MS63, so it has some marks, but that frost and deep fields sure are pretty.

After losing out on a few winners, I try to be biased toward action. @RLSnapper, you hit the key point: your eye is trained and you have confidence in your ability to judge. In my field of interest (capped bust half dimes by die marriage / remarriage), here are the aspects I try to prioritize. I'm assuming that we're talking about BIN-available sales because if it's a straight auction, that's another strategy entirely.
1. Does the seller have a return policy and loads of good feedback? That's my "safety net" if I have buyer's remorse.
2. Am I confident of my attribution of this coin? (This includes validating the variety on the label because the TPGs aren't always perfect). I'll pay a premium for a rare die marriage but don't want to pay "list price" for a common one that may present itself elsewhere next week.
3. If I do decide later on to sell the coin, are there other attractive factors? (CAC bean is a biggie; old holders, eye appeal, a "+" or a "*" on the grade will all help marketability - even if some of those aspects may not be important to me)
I'm not one of those deep pocketed guys that will pay whatever it takes to win a coin. But some of the coins I've "stretched" on are the very coins that I most enjoy - long after the sting of the price wears off.

The good news is you didn't lose a thing. Except for the toughest (True rare coins or grades) most every coin will come up again for auction or sale.

I did something similar last month at a coin club meeting.
A guest had a vintage silver bar and was wondering what it was worth IF it was for sale.
I found one in a larger size from an older auction site that estimated price was $200 to $500.
The guy said he'd take $500...I said I bet you would.
I did some research during the month and figured to the right person that $500 could double and the guy was to come back this month.
I was willing to pay 2x spot but the guy didn't show up last meeting.
Maybe there is still some hope, but I should have made him an offer when I saw it the first time.
Hard to make an offer when I didn't have the money on me at the time.
Some of the best investments I have made are the ones I didn't make.
It happens to you, it happens to me and it happens to everyone at some point in time. Keep your chin up my coin brother as you’ll have your day in the sun. Patience are a virtue.
Imagine, if money was NO object!

Never a need to hesitate.
Wow, all those spectacular coins that would be in our collection.
One huge example:

"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.I feel your pain! This past summer there were a number of nice Early Copper pieces up for sale where I was the second highest bidder... aka, Loser #1... lol... I though I had bid strong on the pieces I lost out on. I take solace in the fact that others made the same determination... and bid accordingly! I worry when I'm the only bidder!! ;-)

@RLSnapper..... I learned that lesson the hard way.... many years ago. If you see it, it has the quality, you really like it..lAND you have the cash.... Strike immediately!! So many times, I 'thought about it', went back to get it, and it was gone.
Now... I get it when I see it. Cheers, RickO
Not at all. 99% of the coins we collect really aren't rare. If you're patient enough, another one will come around sooner or later. I can only think of maybe five coins I have seen which have actually talked to me. It's a different story with those coins, but they are by far the exception, rather than the rule.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
Happens to me all the time. Heck I did it today
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
I try not to second-guess myself and not change the process I use to make prudent decisions.
In the long run, you only regret the ones you didn’t buy!
? One wishes.
I lost a R7 seated Liberty half die marriage on eBay because I got cute and wanted to negotiate $20-30 off of the BIN OBO price instead of hitting the BIN button. When I finally made an offer three minutes later, it had been sold.
I can always buy more than I have money for. I no longer let it bother me when I miss one as I will have more for the next one.
I feel your pain, I missed out on 3 coins in the last few months. They were all relatively common. 2 just went astronomically high and in retrospect I'm glad I didn't get caught up in the moment. One was because there was some issue with my account and being able to bid and that one did frustrate me a bit mostly because I was willing to pay significantly more than it sold for.
Oh well. I'm sure there will be more nice coins in the future.
