This is why I prefer BN Large Cents that have some Red remaining.

Look at this nice 1857 PCGS MS 63 RB Large Cent. Pulled up the Heritage auction from 2006 it was in...didn't look RB back then in an OGH. I am curious to see what kind of $$ it brings on its Ebay auction. PCGS price guide is $875 for BN and $1850 for RB...quite the spread.

Yes, it’s nice looking, but no way I’d pay RB $ for it.
I’ll also add, I can’t imagine why it was cracked from an RB OGH, and resubmitted.
Were they hoping for a RD designation lol!?
    Ok, maybe shooting for 64….

@Walkerguy21D I would bid full PCGS BN for the coin...it's a high end 63...but when copper coins turn in an OGH they lose so much value. That's the point of this post...buy the coin...NOT the holder.

Agree; but ironically, if the winner has a registry set, they’ll be able to enter it as a RB coin.
To add, I liked the color of that 1854 you posted even more. That was a beautiful example of a BN coin with traces of red.

It looks nice, but it is a perfect example of why our host no longer has a grade guarantee on copper.

RB large cents, ones that are truly RB, are some of the most undervalued coins in numismatics. This may be because of coins like the one in the OP.

Better to buy a BN coin that has a little red in it than an RB coin with little or none left. My feeling about RB coins is that they should look pretty dang near red. Wait for one like that. They’re around.

Oh, and as I understand it, PCGS no longer guarantees color on copper. Has this policy changed to no guarantee on grade as well?

I like R&B and Brown Mint State large cents, but I have no interest in the Red ones, especially at the inflated prices. I had a couple of Red pieces when I was a dealer. They turned color too quickly, which proved that they had been “enhanced.” The true Red pieces had a subdued color which sometimes is not that attractive.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

As @BillJones hinted above, untreated coins are actually quite stable. Once copper has been chemically dipped, all bets are off. It’s really important to be able to recognize the color of true originality. Easy to fall prey, we all have. With the price of RD early copper, the penalty can be quite high.

Granted there is not much red, albeit a little more than the photos show, but what’s there hasn’t changed after 30+ years in a Dansco album.

I always think that even a hint of red makes those BN coins pop just a bit more.
