GTG 1854 Large Cent

This coin has a long and storied past. I was reading up on its past owners on the Newman Numismatic Portal last night. GTG..hint it's in an NGC slab from 2009.

Not a series I've done more than dabble in but I'd guess mint state. Super crisp details and clean devices and fields... At least mid ms?

MS64 BN (initially thought 65 but scratch at star too noticeable)
64BN seems correct.
65 BN
NGC would probably grade it 65BN. PCGS would be 64BN, I would guess. I absolutely LOVE old copper.

65BN
It might be MS-66, Brown on the holder. I'd go MS-65, Brown for the grade.
I like this one alot. I'd venture a guess of 65BN.

64BN here also.
If there’s more frosty luster than the photos captured, I could go 65.
Very eye appealing piece regardless.
I could see this one going 66BN.
I'm also thinking 66 BN.

I remember the adage that the grade of brown copper should not exceed MS65, although there are other opinions.
65bn
Grade revealed.....NGC MS66BN. Thanks for all the input. I like this coin a lot. I grade it MS64+. The dealer I am working with I have bought 2 coins from before. Hopefully we can make a deal. I would try to cross it as a 65...if that fails just keep it in the original slab.
@RLSnapper Why do you think its only a 64+? That cent is super clean, not many marks at all.

Late to the game, but I thought 65BN.... Let us know if you submit to cross... Cheers, RickO
That looks alot like a coin I didn't win at Great Collections the other day. Green Beaned?
I knew it would happen.
I have never heard that one. Does that cover all series or just large cents? My opinion is color should not determine the grade. If the coin is a 66 it is a 66. Regardless of the designation.
@gumby1234 there are actually 2 marks on the coin...the long thin one by star 5 and what looks like a die break between the final S in STATES and O in OF is actually a "fine hairline scratch" according to the catalogue description from one of its sales. Thats why I give it 64+. I have compared it to a couple 65's in my set and it is close. I think the overall eye appeal gets it into a PCGS 65 holder. The dealer wants more than 65+ money for the coin. I can't quite pull the trigger on that price.
@jmski52 this is not the coin you were bidding on at GC. I don't think it would CAC at MS66....maybe MS65.
MS64BN was my first impression but from reading the other comments I could be convinced of 65... gorgeous piece!!

@RLSnapper I saw those marks. I consider them minor and not distracting. If you don't blow the coin up to the size of a dinner plate can you really see much of them?

64bn based on the holder.
My guess was 65 but I’m not surprised to see it’s a 66, the luster is probably excellent!
If the holder is in good condition, why not just leave it be? I would.

Late also, but would have guessed 65BN also. I hope, if you obtain it, that it crosses. You never know.

I would send it to CAC in the NGC holder. If you do please update us.

It covers any copper that has Red, Red/Brown, and Brown designations. I consider it more a measure of value then wear.
Honestly I'm not surprised at 66 at all. 2 minor non distracting marks is low even at 66, but there's much more than just marks that make the grade (color, original surfaces, etc).
I'd be shocked if pcgs didn't at least give it a 65. I'd say worth a shot just make sure you set minimum 65 if you don't want them to cross any lower, and they will keep it in the current holder if it won't at least go 65.
At 65+ money that seems like a decent deal imo if you plan to keep... Unless you are planning to flip then keep your powder dry.
