Got my very first coin stickered

P0CKETCHANGEP0CKETCHANGE Posts: 2,560 ✭✭✭✭✭

When I showed this coin to Rick Snow at FUN a few weeks ago, it was the second time in as many FUN shows that he told me it was a "64 all day" and that he'd recommend sending it back to PCGS. I had taken his advice the first time and sent it through for a Regrade, but it came back in another 63 holder, so this time I decided to take him up on his offer to sticker it.

I've seen Eagle Eye Photo Seal coins before—including the prestigious @winesteven collection—but never realized they came with a hand-signed, laminated card, so that was a nice surprise!

Here's the TrueView & the Photo Seal pics. I'll be sending the coin to CAC (for sticker evaluation, not CACG) once they reopen the Collector submissions. Any and all comments welcome on the coin, including opinions on upgrade and CAC worthiness.

I see no reason to think it would not pass at CAC, looks gold bean worthy to my eye but who knows. Great eye appeal, congrats.

That's an attractive coin. I really like the red tinges that adds interest to an already fine example.

That coin deserves the coveted gold CAC sticker. B)

    Great coin!

Others may not know, but in addition to Rick’s obverse and reverse closeups which you show above and the plasticized card, he also provided you with a real nice Slab photo (the same one he used for the other side of the signed plasticized card). All three of his photos are downloadable for use, such as uploading to your coins registered on the PCGS registry website, or even on this forum like you’ve done. Quite a value for only $15, and if your coin fails getting an Eagle Eye Photo Seal, Rick refunds the $15.

If your plan is to send it next to CAC as you indicate, why wait for them to reopen the lower sticker tier? They will undoubtedly raise the price somewhat from the old $16. You can send it in now with less of a crowd at the current $35 tier. That higher tier MIGHT have a price increase too.

You now have a dilemma. Assuming you get a CAC sticker, if you want the graders to be able to see the double stickers, you would need to use Reconsideration instead of Regrade. My experience with Reconsideration is it’s a lot tougher to get an increase to the next whole grade number than with Regrade. If you’d be satisfied with an increase of a “plus”, Reconsideration would be best, in my opinion. By the way, Regrade provides a new cert number, while Reconsideration retains the same cert number, and the coin is only removed from the current holder is if it upgrades with that method.

Here’s your slab photo for others to see. Again, congratulations!

Thanks Steve for your astute comments, as per usual, and for pointing out the slab shot—I missed that on the Eagle Eye portal, so it’s good to have that.

Re: CAC, I am under the impression that the collector tier is on hold, including the “free” review (where one pays only for coins that sticker). I have a decent number of other coins that I need to send in (some of which are at PCGS currently), so between that and the shipping costs, I’m waiting to do everything at once.

Assuming this IHC green beans, I’ll probably send it for Reconsideration, especially since Rick already told me he’d sticker it as a 64 as well. The ideal outcome would be to get the coveted gold bean from JA, in which case I’d send it for “+ only” Reconsideration, but I assume the chances of a gold are slim to none in a contemporary holder.

That is a really nice IHC..... And for IHC's, I value the Eagle Eye sticker much more than a CAC sticker. Cheers, RickO

I agree with the cost effectiveness issue, regarding not ony shipping, but the no charge for Collector Submitters for failed coins. Keep in mind their policy on that will likely change too - speculation may have it as 20 free rejects for stickering per year.

If by chance you do get a gold bean, keep in mind that if you say "+" only, you may then be limiting yourself to 63+, and not get the 64+ from PCGS. While costly, if you get a 64, you can then send it in some time later, and then you might get the 64+. I bought a $20 Liberty on eBay as a 64+ w/CAC. It got upgraded to a 65, and subsequently to a 65+. Very uncommon, but it did happen to that coin. Naturally, it's all about the coin, and the coin has to make the argument for itself!

Thanks for clarifying. Yes, that’s what I had in mind—in the rare case it actually gets gold stickered, I’d want to limit a Reconsideration to 63+ so there’s no chance losing the gold bean, as I’d prefer it to a green beaned 64.

I sent this coin to CAC and surprisingly, it did not bean.

Rick said he’d have stickered it as a 64, but between not passing with JA and not getting a bump on a regrade at PCGS, I guess Rick is in the minority. (edit: although to others' points, I value his opinion highly on IHCs)

I still very much like the coin but probably won’t be investing any more money into it.

Lovely coin ... very, very nice! <3

A green (or gold) bean would be great, but remember, those stickers are not the end all, be all. That's a great coin from what I can see, and when it comes to copper (and copper-nickel as the case may be), Rick's comments (and approval) mean a lot.

I have seen a number of YouTube videos showing CAC sticker failure. I mean seasoned guys getting 1 out of 10 stickered. Not surprising...JA wants to end stickering and what better way than to tighten your standards and raise the price. CACG is now the default green bean.

I went 4 for 20 overall. Some of the ones I sent in, I suspected wouldn’t bean, but I wanted to be sure. This IHC was probably the biggest disappointment. I did fairly well on my Peace Dollars, going 3 for 7.
