An unexpected upgrade to my Buffalo set

There are a small handful of coins I consider for upgrade for my buffalo set. This really wasn’t one of them, but then sometimes there are just windows of opportunity. The image below is the coin that has been in my set since 2007. Its made the full journey of my buffalo set: purchased NGC65 at a Baltimore show that year, made raw for an album set for a number of years, graded for PCGS (and upgraded to 66) when the coins move to the SDB and I "went registry". I was always a fan of the gold/rose tone look. Anytime I had considered upgrading, I looked at what I had and decided it suited me just fine.

Now truth be told I had seen some 37-Ds that I found very eye appealing, but they were always in 67 holders, and the jump to 67 pricing always gave me heart burn. Then I stumbled across the coin below, which arrived today. It is graded 66 but certainly checks all the boxes I wanted to fill at the 67 price point. Real blazer, mark free and eye appeal that suits me A-OKAY.

  • That's a beautiful coin. It must have been struck with a new die. It's spotless.

Great addition, your set must be a topline set if they all look this good.

@ad4400... I like your new Buffalo nickel... Although the same grade, it is more aesthetically pleasing to me. Cheers, RickO

Judging by the strike comparison on the top feather, the second one is better struck and has better overall eye appeal.
